Obama tells US football team - 'You did us proud'

President Obama has praised the efforts of the US football team in the World Cup in a phone call to two of its star players.

Despite the US being eliminated from the tournament by Belgium, Mr Obama told goalkeeper Tim Howard and team captain Clint Dempsey they had made the nation proud.

"To see the way you guys captured the hearts and the imaginations of the whole country is unbelievable."
