The Blue Beetle On Television?

Posted by Craig Byrne | Blue Beetle | Sunday 13 June 2010 9:42 am

Blue Beetle TV Series?Big, big news to come from DC Comics’ Geoff Johns on Twitter…

“Blue Beetle’s going to appear in most of the Brave and the Bold’s this year and we’re hoping to develop a live-action show. Fingers crossed!”

Adding to that, he also said:

We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes’ scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome.

and

If I can break it out of the vault, I’ll bring it to SDCC. LIVE ACTION BLUE BEETLE!!

The Blue Beetle is a character that has actually existed in the four-color comics world since 1939. Originally published by Fox Comics and Holyoke Publishing, the character was given new life in the 1960’s by the now-defunct Charlton Comics, who also published Captain Atom and The Question. It was during this time that the “scarab” that gave the Blue Beetle powers was introduced, and then Steve Ditko reinvisioned him as a more street-level hero with an array of fantastic gadgets.

It was the Ditko-era Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, who rised to prominence at DC Comics starting with Crisis on Infinite Earths and leading to his own series and appearances in Justice League International. In 2005, Ted Kord was killed by Maxwell Lord in DC’s Countdown to Infinite Crisis which was co-written by Geoff Johns himself. The current Beetle, Jaime Reyes, was introduced soon after, getting the powers of the scarab which also is the means of his having an alien suit of armor.

The Reyes Blue Beetle had his own comic book series for three years and has appeared on DC’s Brave and the Bold. Currently, he is one of the most prominent heroes, if not the most prominent hero, of Hispanic descent.

Thanks to Ian for the tip. Would we like to see such a thing, especially if the legacy of Ted Kord is involved? Yes. We. Would.

Interesting aside: John Rogers, who developed the unaired-but-still-loved Global Frequency TV series who is also responsible for the fantastic Leverage on TNT is one of Jaime Reyes’ creators. Maybe he could finally work on a comic book TV series after all? It’ll be interesting to see how this all pans out… what do you think? Talk about this on our forum!

Why dont they just introduce Blue Beetle in Smallville then spin him off into his own series? Sort of as a way of dipping their toes in the water before diving in unless of course they already have a plausible script and a basic idea of how they want the show to look then I might tune in.

I’d rather it be it’s own thing, TBH. I want it to have it’s own feel.
