Because one of the performers went on to become one of the PRC's leading drama theorists, and in part due to his influence the play was canonized as the country's first modern drama. The article provides a comprehensive review of the literature, including Ouyang Yuqian's essay that seems to have provided the main source of information for most subsequent studies.
