Portuguese article name change

[edit]

The Portuguese article's name was changed in 2003 to Morte de José Kairala or "Death of José Kairala" - Cameron Dewe (talk) 22:27, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 3 April 2025

[edit]

Homicide at the Brazilian SenateDeath of José Kairala – Per WP:DEATHS, it would be most appropriate to title the event after the victim given the lack of an English common name. Move to Killing of José Kairala per WP:DEATHS. It was a homicide. PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:16, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: The suggested title fails to capture what is notable about the incident. Kairala wasn't even the intended target of the shooting; he was killed accidentally, and he doesn't seem especially well known. What is notable about the incident is that it was a homicide at the Brazilian Senate. Using "Killing of José Kairala" would also imply that the shooter set out to kill him intentionally, which is not the case. Both of the alternative titles that have been suggested are red links, which indicates pretty clearly that those titles are not where readers are looking for information about this incident. Let's also remember that WP:DEATHS is merely an opinionated essay, not a Wikipedia policy or guideline. — BarrelProof (talk) 18:10, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I concede the current title provides the best summary of the event to a layman. However, I don't think Kairala not being well known should have any bearing on whether his name is in the title. In my opinion, this event is just as notable for the people involved as the location.
Also, the fact that both titles are red links can be attributed to lack of English media interest more than anything else. The article for this event, the killer, the victim, and the intended target were all made within the last 5 years and all have under 50 edits. This is despite all people involved being relatively high profile politicians, with the killer even being the father of a former Brazilian president. • Move to 1963 Brazilian Senate homicide. Per the stipulations of WP:NCE, the title should be of the format <when><where><what>, unless the event is so well-known that the year isn't required (I don't think that applies here). Like BarrelProof, I'm not convinced we need to switch the focus of the title to Kairala, since he wasn't the intended target, but it should be brought into line with the naming conventions. The current title sounds like it could be the title of an Agatha Christie novel rather than a description of a historical event...  — Amakuru (talk) 10:40, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The article name definitely needs to be changed, and I agree with the general direction you're going, though perhaps "shooting" or "killing" would work better since no one was convicted of "homicide", plus Kairala wasn't the target. Paris1127 (talk) 23:44, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
