McGrath was arrested outside his first wife's house

Mr McGrath, who also played for Aston Villa, appeared before magistrates on Tuesday.

Manchester City Magistrates Court was told he was arrested on Monday outside the home of his first wife, Claire.

London-born Mr McGrath, 43, who has battled drink problems, had been staying at her house in Northenden after splitting from his second wife, it emerged.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was bailed until 16 February 2004.

Knee problems

Paul McGrath joined Manchester United in 1983, winning an FA Cup medal in 1985.

He was forced out with the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson and moved to Aston Villa, where he became a favourite with the fans.

But he was later unable to train due to knee problems and eventually retired in 1998.

The defender won the first of his 83 international caps in 1985 and helped Ireland to the European Championships in 1988 and qualification to two World Cups.
