Motherwell have named Maurice Malpas as their new manager after it was confirmed that Terry Butcher was accepting an offer from Sydney.
Malpas, who is also Scotland Under-21's caretaker boss, has been Butcher's assistant since February 2003.
The 43-year-old new manager said: "Working with Terry was great and we had a tremendous relationship.
"I wish him all the best and I am looking forward to running my own show at the helm of a great club."
Malpas took charge of the national under-21s after the departure of Rainer Bonhof, to whom he had been assistant.
The young Scots have had a disappointing run of results, culminating in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat away to Northern Ireland, but Malpas expects for better results at club level.
"We have shown over the last few years that we can compete successfully against the best clubs in Scotland and we can build on what we have achieved," said Malpas, who has been given a three-year contract.
Butcher had recommended that the former Dundee United and Scotland defender be his successor before heading out for talks with the A-League champions.
And the former England and Rangers player said: "I will always cherish the great times I had at Motherwell and I am delighted that Maurice is my replacement.
"I wish him the very best and there is no doubt in my mind that the club has made the right move in appointing him manager."
Malpas expects to announce the name of his assistant within the next few days.
Former Scotland defender Paul Hegarty, who was Malpas's boss while he was coaching at Tannadice, is being tipped for the job.
Motherwell majority shareholder John Boyle said: "There was never any doubt in our minds that Maurice is the man to succeed Terry.
"He is a first-class coach and we are fortunate that we can turn to a man of his ability and give the club stability and continuity.
"I am sure that Maurice will lead Motherwell in challenging the top clubs in the SPL.
"We all wish Terry Butcher the very best in his new job at Sydney and will always be grateful for the tremendous work he did at Motherwell."
