British driver Lewis Hamilton has won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award after his remarkable debut Formula One season.
The 22-year-old driver powered his way to four Grands Prix victories in 2007 before finishing second in the F1 championship behind Kimi Raikkonen.
Fellow Briton Paula Radcliffe won the World Comeback of the Year prize after her New York marathon victory.
Her triumph came just 10 months after she gave birth to daughter Isla.
Tennis pair Roger Federer and Justine Henin won the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
Laureus Sportsman of the Year winner for a record fourth year in a row, Federer won three Grand Slam titles in 2007 while Henin was victorious in two.
The South African rugby union team were named Team of the Year after their 2007 World Cup success.
The winners were announced at a gala ceremony attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin at St Petersburg's famous Mariinsky Theatre.
