An excellent treatment on a must-know topic in JavaScript

I liked this book because it took what I would have had to read across various blogs / tutorials and placed it all in one book. And I say that even though I have read many blogs / tutorials regarding Promises. That doesn't mean that this book is a cheap copy 'n paste of a bunch of online articles. Rather, it is a succinct, well-explained introduction to Promises. Key takeaway there is "succinct." You are not hammered with tons of verbose explanation and impossible to understand code examples. The author does an excellent job in pacing and topic coverage. There are plenty of code examples in the book that are easy to reference against what the author explains. One point that I think stands out about this book is that although it is possible to learn about Promises online, because this is a whole book dedicated on the matter, it fills in any holes that are may be omitted from reading online articles. Another plus is that the book is a fairly light read. You could easily read the book in a single weekend. The book is divided into 6 chapters and if you can get through just the first three chapters and really understand it, you've pretty much won the battle. Those chapters cover all of the basics of how Promises, then(), catch(), resolve(), and reject() work. Also, of importance, what is actually being returned in each step. Do you already know when a then() would return undefined? Do you already know when to use resolve() versus "return" in a then() function? If not, then this book covers those specifics and is not overly verbose. The examples in the book (minus the last chapter) use non-ES6 syntax if that matters to anyone. The last chapter of the book, though, discusses ES6 and how its specifics integrate with using Promises. I found the chapter the least useful because even after reading it, I didn't pick up anything that was only possible or not possible with the use of ES6 syntax. It almost felt like the chapter was thrown into the book to ride on the coattails of ES6, which was brand new at the time. The book is copyrighted 2015, the same year that ES6 was officially released. It was not a bad chapter, just that it seemed out of place in a book on Promises and, at least for me, didn't further my understanding of Promises in any significant way. I paid about $10 for the Kindle version of this book and for the price and what I get all contained in one book, it's a great deal in my opinion. Well done.

This is a good book that covers JavaScript Promises without obsessing over any one particular framework. Sometimes the writing can be a bit difficult to follow but usually the author is clear and distinct with his explanations and examples. As a bonus this book spends the first chapter giving the best explanation of the JavaScript asynchronous call stack and the run-to-completion model that I have read. This chapter alone should be mandatory reading for every AJAX developer.

I was a little shocked at how short the book is when it arrived but the content inside was totally worth it, even to a veteran programmer that wanted to review and solidify his knowledge.

The book also covers the most important parts of Bluebird and jQuery Promises, explaining the nuances with the mark of a person with thorough knowledge on the topic. The book definitely will give you a solid foundation on Promises and async JavaScript. All of this in less than about 100 pages! The book is packed with info and is a must-read. Highly recommend.

The vendor specific coverage of promises in the latter chapters one could skip. The fact that he chose JQuery promises to be covered is useful due to it's wide adoption.
