Seven jobs at Girvan's Nestle chocolate factory at risk as company plans Poland switch

The Swiss-owned company announced it is to cut 298 UK jobs as Blue Riband biscuit production moves to Eastern Europe.

Seven jobs are at risk at the Girvan Nestle chocolate factory.

The Grangestone plant supplies chocolate crumb using rich local milk for the firm’s products including Kit Kat and Quality Street.


The Swiss owned company announced on Tuesday it is to cut 298 UK jobs as Blue Riband biscuit production moves to Poland.


It is launching a 45-day consultation period with trade unions and worker representatives.

And it hopes cuts at Girvan will be voluntary between now and next year.

The company confirmed around 50 people work in the Girvan plant.

The changes also mean revised shift patterns at all four sites affected.

Most of the jobs are going at York and Fawdon in Newcastle.

Fifteen staff will also lose their jobs in Halifax.

A spokesman said: “These proposals are being made by Nestle UK to ensure that these sites operate more efficiently and remain competitive in a rapidly changing external environment.

GMB union boss Tim Roach said: “These factories should be exporting chocolate - not people’s jobs.

“The Government needs to step in before it’s too late and reassure millions of workers across the country this is not just the tip of the Brexit iceberg.”

The Girvan plant opened in 1979.
