DAHL JOINS TOON FOR PETE'S SAKE.
Striker Jon Dahl Tomasson yesterday revealed why he turned down Barcelona to join Newcastle United. The pounds 2.5 million Dane, who began his Tyneside career with two goals in a four-team tournament in Dublin, made the decision after consulting Manchester United's Peter Schmeichel.
"I went to Barcelona and talked to them but decided on Newcastle instead. There were several reasons but the main one was Peter," he said.
"He told me to come to England and to Newcastle especially. You don't argue with him, do you?"
Tomasson staked a claim for a Premier League place with impressive performances as Newcastle won the tournament.
He scored 18 goals for Heerenveen last season in Holland but says he does not like to play up front, despite his goals against PSV Eindhoven.
"I prefer to be behind the front two," he said.
l PAUL MERSON last night issued an open invitation to former Arsenal pal Ian Wright: Come and join me at Middlesbrough.
Boro's pounds 5million new boy would love to renew his strike partnership with Wright on Teesside.
Gunners idol Wright has told his Highbury bosses he wants to stay and establish a new club goalscoring record. But Boro boss Bryan Robson is still prepared to offer 33-year-old Wright a fabulous three-year deal worth pounds 4m plus a pounds 4.5m fee.
Merson claimed: "Ian loves Arsenal, but if he knew they wanted to sell him he'd be on the first plane up here.
"People thought I would never leave Highbury, but he's in the same position as me - if the price is right the club will let you go."
