A major cleanliness campaign in railway stations in the Chennai Division, including Chennai Central and Egmore, is on and contractors have been appointed for cleaning the stations and tracks, said Chennai Railway Divisional Railway Manager Anurag here on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters, Mr. Anurag said for all suburban stations within the city limits Rs.5.4 lakh was being spent every three months for cleaning operations.
For MRTS stations, a sum of Rs.1.64 lakh was being spent for cleaning stations from Park Town to Tirumailai and Rs.2.20 lakh from Tirumailai to Velachery. Contracts had already been awarded for a period of three years for cleaning Chennai Central and Egmore stations for a value of Rs.4.31 crore and Rs.2.05 crore respectively.
The division had taken up cleaning of not only station premises but also railway tracks and railway coaches. The administration had also placed dustbins at vantage points in all stations. On-board cleaning of major trains, including Shatabdi and Rajdhani Expresses, was being done at Central and Egmore. All these measures, he said, needed public support and appealed to passengers and the public to cooperate.
