Nine’s new talent show The Voice begins production next week.
All four coaches, Seal, Keith Urban, Delta Goodrem and Joel Madden, will hear more than 120 singers perform.
Michael Healy, Nine’s Director of Television, said: “To secure such world-class coaches has been a coup for this show and the network. The mix of talent and unique format will, we truly believe, be a captivating experience for our viewers.”
Julie Ward, Director of Entertainment Shine Australia, added: “There is something magnetic about this format. It has attracted the highest quality of professionals to be our coaches and they are genuinely passionate about giving something back to a new generation of talent.
“Just as we have attracted great coaches, we have amazing singers who see this as more than a reality TV show. This isn’t a format for wannabes and shower singers. The majority of our artists are pursuing music as a career path. Great singers with great songs, every show will be a concert,” she said.
Hosted by Darren McMullen (The Magicians, Minute To Win It, Love In The Wild) and based on a Dutch format, the show has three stages of competition: the Blind Auditions, the Battle phase, and Live performance show.
It will air on Nine in the coming months.

They did a really bad job with the ticketing for the first show….. hundred or so people were turned away as they were full…. many parents with their kids were pissed!
Oh dear, what a direct copy of the US team … The Country guy, the Black guy, the Rock guy, and the blonde princess! Too obvious … Seal and Madden should have been replaced by Aussies … poor effort.
Wow, another talent show. That’s novel.
i have heard that ‘The Voice’ is is rumored to go up against ‘AGT’ because channel 9 want to capitalise on the Brian vs Delta thing. I hope this is not true but if it is the people at channel 9 are complete d!ckheads.
@The Other Adam : Seal is English. And far from being a one hit wonder, he has a healthy catalogue of hits (Killer, Kiss From A Rose, Crazy, Prayer For the Dying….).
I had to look up who Joel Madden is (gawd, I hate his band!!!) but think it’s a coup to get such a name line-up of judges. I got a lot of time for Seal, too. But talent and singing shows are a dime a dozen and I’m sick to death of them. I won’t be watching.
Nine will rely on this baby to work. Not much else has fired for them this year. Even TBBT has been beaten.
X factor and idol don’t air the ‘cattle call’ stage either it’s done in front of producers. I still think the voice starts at the same stage x factor and idol do just with a small fraction of the amount of acts.
With Australia’s Got Talent coming up on Seven, Nine is in danger of making the same mistake as they did with Excess Baggage by putting similar shows on at the same time.
I am surprised they got such big names as the judges. Hoping it does well!
It actually begins Production tomorrow…….im going ;-)
Don’t think it’s like Idol really…I thought the audition process was not anyone and everyone turning up at a convention centre, slapping a number on their chest and belting out karaoke hits.
Isn’t it for genuine vocal talents, not anyone who reckons they can sing a bit?
So there won’t be Idol style disaster auditions where someone who can’t sing a note goes in front of a selection panel and makes a fool of themselves. At least haven’t seen any…
By the look of the US Version, many of the people who audition are semi-established artists, or at least are aspiring singers with some vocal background.
So where as Idol gets many tens of thousands going to open auditions, ‘The Voice’ only auditions serious vocal talent, hence only 120+ hopefuls.
Can’t imagine an artist of Keith Urban’s stature sitting through thousands of hopeless singers assaulting his eardrums! Ouch.
There’s some great youtube clips of US Season 2 moments, the US one is fantastic. The 4 stars are great…cool chemistry. Hopefully the Oz version gets the same out of Urban, Seal, Delta and Joel.
best youtube clip is NBC ‘The Voice Season 2 Sneak Peek’.
Love the US version, it’s better than Idol as far as the audition process goes. Looking forward to seeing our local version.
Not showing cattle calls? Total respect for that choice! Maybe I’ll give this one a go!!
Why do they need these talentless Americans on an Aussie TV show? Seal is a one hit wonder and Joel couldn’t sing to save his life…
Sometimes wannabes and shower singers are the most memorable. Luke O’Dell comes to mind.
Why are these kinds of shows increasing? Aren’t we past the peak point, so they should be disappearing and we can get back to a semblance of normality on TV again?
120 seems like an extremely small amount.
Mr J. 120 have all been through auditions already. So it’s the same as Idol having its Top 100 really. The Voice is not showing cattle call auditions.
Hope this doesn’t ‘GO!’ the way of Excess Baggage…
