The Return of Retro

A new member joins the staff, and she shows us where we can get our hands on a piece of classic Zelda memorabilia…

Howdy, one and all! Allow me to introduce myself – I’m andi, and I’m here to help bring you guys the latest in Zelda news and information!

Today, I’ve got a fun bit of knowledge to share with all of you out there. ThinkGeek, an aptly-named website devoted to selling the best of geek-friendly items, has something in stock that any hardcore Zelda or Nintendo fan will need in his or her collection – Zelda Game & Watch!

Well, it’s not the original Game & Watch, exactly… it’s the Mini Classic remake of the famous game. The Zelda Mini Classic was originally released in 1998 to the US and Europe as part of a set of 12 keychain-sized Game & Watch ports. Up until recently, they’ve been fairly hard to come across for even the most devout of Zelda fans. Thanks to ThinkGeek, though, anybody in almost 100 different countries can easily get their hands on this piece of retro fandom for only $8.99 (plus shipping and handling).

This game obviously doesn’t have the same depth as something like A Link to the Past, but it’s well worth the money. It not only helped to pioneer the portable video game industry, but it’s also a fun game that will have you addicted for hours. And plus, getting to gloat that you own Zelda Game & Watch is a nice ego-boost. While you’re there, you can also pick up the Donkey Kong Game & Watch for double the bonus to your Nintendo nerd score.

Keep your eyes out for my upcoming article about the Game & Watch games – which will include all of the details about the Zelda Game & Watch along with the tragic story of the system’s designer, Gunpei Yokoi, one of the most influential men in the history of the video game industry.

Edit: Wow, that was quick. It looks like people have already managed to buy out ThinkGeek’s current supply of Zelda Mini Classics. They still have Donkey Kong ones available, but I guess that any of us who want to play Zelda Game & Watch now will either have to do some hunting on Ebay or earn a lot of stars in Game & Watch Gallery 4
