Carbolic acid (or phenol, extracted from coal tar or petroleum) was the first antiseptic to be promoted in surgery by Joseph Lister. It was also regularly used in the home, often in the form of carbolic soap. It was originally sprayed freely in the air but was soon recognised to be a dangerous poison.
