Men's tournament

The men's tournament of Football 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 22 July-7 August 2021 in the Sapporo Dome , the Tokyo Stadium , and various other locations. With 16 teams competing, the event was won by the team from Brazil , with Spain taking the silver medal and Mexico taking bronze.
Format [ ] The competition exists out of four groups of four, with each team playing another once. Standings are primarily based on win/loss-record, with the team with the most points after a certain time limit winning a match. The top two ranked teams advance to the quarterfinals. After this, a single knockout phase is played, with the winners of the quarterfinals advancing to the semifinals, and the winners of the final winning the event.
Preview [ ] Sixteen teams qualified for the event, with plenty of medal contenders. The biggest expectations would be on traditional powerhouse Brazil , who won their first men's football gold medal in 2016, beating Germany in the final. But with the previous Olympic champions Mexico and Argentina , as well as renowned teams such as France and Spain also having qualified, the field looked very strong. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders included the home team Japan , Australia , and Ivory Coast .
