Olympics Wiki

The men's tournament of Football 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 22 July-7 August 2021 in the Sapporo Dome, the Tokyo Stadium, and various other locations. With 16 teams competing, the event was won by the team from Brazil, with Spain taking the silver medal and Mexico taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of four groups of four, with each team playing another once. Standings are primarily based on win/loss-record, with the team with the most points after a certain time limit winning a match. The top two ranked teams advance to the quarterfinals. After this, a single knockout phase is played, with the winners of the quarterfinals advancing to the semifinals, and the winners of the final winning the event.

Preview[]

Sixteen teams qualified for the event, with plenty of medal contenders. The biggest expectations would be on traditional powerhouse Brazil, who won their first men's football gold medal in 2016, beating Germany in the final. But with the previous Olympic champions Mexico and Argentina, as well as renowned teams such as France and Spain also having qualified, the field looked very strong. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders included the home team Japan, Australia, and Ivory Coast.
