Abstract

Interest in behavioral assessment has increased tremendously over the past 10 years. Prior to 1976, no major textbooks and only a few articles had been written expressly devoted to the topic of behavioral assessment (e.g., Bijou & Grimm, 1972; Kanfer & Saslow, 1969). Beginning in 1977, there was a virtual explosion of literature on behavioral assessment. No less than 10 textbooks (e.g., Ciminero, Calhoun, & Adams, 1977; Cone & Hawkins, 1977; Haynes, 1978; Hersen & Bellack, 1976) and two journals (Behavioral Assessment and the Journal of Behavioral Assessment) appeared devoted solely to the topic of behavioral assessment. Expansion of this literature has continued to include books related to behavioral assessment with specific populations (Powers & Randleman, 1984), ages (Barlow, 1981; Mash & Terdal, 1981) and for school-related settings (Shapiro, 1987; Shapiro & Kratochwill, 1988). Additionally, the methodology of behavioral assessment, which was originally developed to evaluate nonacademic problems of children, has been equally developed for assessing academically related school problems (Deno, 1985; Shapiro & Lentz, 1985, 1986).
