Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez pointed to the ‘suffering’ he endured at the end of his Reds career as he sensationally netted against Brazil on his long-awaited international comeback.

The Uruguayan netted a second half equaliser in a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw in Recife as the visitors fought back from being 2-0 down.

Douglas Costa scored for Brazil after 39 seconds before Renato Augusto doubled their lead on 26 minutes.

Edinson Cavani pulled one back before Suarez struck just after half-time.

Suarez, who captained the side at the Itaipava Arena Pernambuco, bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s final group match of the World Cup on June 24, 2014 and was given a nine-game ban from competitive internationals, as well as a four-month ban from all football-related activity.

Suarez never kicked a ball for Liverpool again after the incident and was promptly sold to Barcelona for a reported £75million fee just three weeks later.

Now, after turning out for Uruguay for the first time in 640 days, he said: “It was the dream comeback.

“I always try to do my best for the team and luckily my goal earned the draw.

“We were surprised by the first goal they scored against us.

“They caught us out within a minute and it forced us to change everything we planned from the beginning, but as always this team showed defiance and character to turn it around.

“It was moving in every way, firstly for the suffering I’d endured and secondly for the support I’ve felt at home with my wife and my two children.”
