    Gauthe is one of three priests from the Lafayette Diocese accused in damage suits of molesting parishioners’ children after church officials were warned about them. The suits allege the children were told sex with the priests was a special religious rite for which they had been chosen by God (English)
    The Diocese of Lafayette was rocked by controversy in 1983, however, when Bishop Frey suspended a diocesan priest, Father Gilbert J. Gauthe, who admitted having sexually abused 36 young boys. Bishop Frey accepted diocesan financial responsibility for the harm done by the priest, and the diocese reached out-of-court financial settlements with many of the boys' families. Although the exact amounts were not known, they added up to several million dollars. (English)
