Younus has had spells in England with Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire

Surrey have signed Pakistan batsman Younus Khan to play for the county in all competitions until mid-July. The news will be a disappointment to a number of Surrey fans who had hoped West Indies legend Brian Lara could be tempted out of retirement instead. The 40-year-old had nets at the Oval in April but could not agree terms. Younus, 32, is banned indefinitely from playing for Pakistan after he was ruled to be guilty of team "infighting" during last winter's tour of Australia. He will not be joined by India's Piyush Chawla at The Oval, Surrey revealed. The leg-spinner has been refused permission by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. But the only condition on Younus's involvement is that he obtains the correct paperwork from the Home Office. The captain of the 2008 World Twenty20 winners has appeared in 224 one-day internationals and has an impressive Test match average of 50.09.

We have a number of young batsman who will doubtless benefit greatly from being able to train and play alongside him

He previously had spells in English cricket with Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. Surrey manager Chris Adams told the club website: "I am confident that bringing a world-class player such as Younus Khan to Surrey will have a very positive effect on the side. "As well as benefiting from the weight of runs we hope he will bring, we have a number of young batsmen who will doubtless benefit greatly from being able to train and play alongside him. "In terms of Twenty20 cricket, the experience and skills that saw him lead Pakistan to the ICC World Twenty20 title in 2009 are sure to greatly help us in our pursuit of the trophy."
