Mum’s sacrifices motivated gold medalist to excel in studies

Gold medallist Monishkar Krishna Naidu’s story powerfully reminds us that behind every shining achievement lies the invisible strength of family, faith, and sacrifice.
In a proud and historic milestone for the Naidu family of Saweni, Lautoka, the 24-year-old has etched his name into Fiji National University’s academic records to receive the prestigious Gold Medals.
He scooped the Most Outstanding Student in Physics while graduating with a Post Graduate Diploma in Science (Physics) during FNU’s 2025 graduation ceremony. Mr Naidu fulfilled a promise made to his parents, one that brought immense pride to his family and community.
“This gold medal is more than an academic accolade — it represents years of perseverance, unspoken sacrifices, and undying love,” Mr Naidu said.
From humble beginnings, his journey has been one of resilience, sacrifice, and the unwavering love of his parents, Vinodan and Mohini Naidu.
Throughout his life, he witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced and the strength with which they rose above them.
In dedicating his award, he paid heartfelt tribute to his parents, especially his mother, describing them as the silent heroes behind his achievement.
“The gold medal isn’t mine; it belongs to my mum and dad,” he added.
“It’s a testament to their hard work, sacrifice, and unconditional love. Every challenge they faced, every burden they quietly carried, and every silent prayer they whispered, this medal carries all of that.”
After completing his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from the University of the South Pacific in 2023, he was posted to teach in Labasa.
Even while adjusting to a new environment, he held firm to his promise of continuing his education.
Vow to parents
Amidst these transitions, he vowed to his parents that he would one day return home with a gold medal, a promise he proudly fulfilled on 17th April.
“Mum and Dad faced life’s storms with resilience and grace,” Mr Naidu said.
“They taught me that perseverance can overcome any obstacle. They are the ones who made the impossible possible, inspiring me to dream beyond my limits.”
He also expressed his deep gratitude to his elder sister Monisha Naidu Kumar, a lawyer, and brother-in-law Anushil Kumar, acknowledging their unwavering encouragement, wisdom, and belief in his potential.
“Sister Monisha and Jija Anushil, you’ve always been my inspiration. Akka, like a second mother, your guidance and love carried me through life’s toughest moments. This achievement reflects the values and standards you both instilled in me.”
The Naidu family also deeply felt the absence of their late grandfather, Subbaiya Naidu, on this proud day. His blessings and legacy remain alive in the family’s hearts.
“As we watched him take the stage, tears filled our eyes,” recalled Ms Kumar.
“It wasn’t just a graduation, it was a triumph of resilience, sacrifice, courage, and belief. A moment worth more than a million dollars, truly priceless.”
Beyond his immediate family, Mr Naidu extended his heartfelt appreciation to family, friends, whose support and encouragement shaped his journey.
“This medal belongs to every person who believed in me, stood by me in difficult times, and celebrated my victories along the way,” he said.
As Mr Naidu looks ahead to new opportunities, his story stands as a beacon of inspiration to young Fijians: that no dream is too big when fueled by love, belief, and determination.
