Magnum P.I. has added a new (yet familiar!) face as it moves into its new home on NBC.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Michael Rady (Chicago Med, Timeless) will recur during Season 5 of the island drama as Detective Chris Childs of the Honolulu PD. He will make his debut in the Season 5 premiere (date TBD).
In addition to Timeless and his run as Chicago Med‘s Dr. Matt Cooper, Rady’s TV credits also include Swingtown, Greek, Melrose Place (The CW edition), The Mentalist, Emily Owens. M.D., Jane the Virgin, UnREAL and many a Hallmark Channel movie.
After Magnum P.I. was unceremoniously cancelled at CBS, NBC this past July rode to the rescue and ordered 20 episodes to be split over two seasons (the series’ fifth and sixth) — and with an option for more, in success.
Of course, for many loyal viewers, the cry is, “But when will Magnum return?!”
Filming on Season 5 only began in mid-September, and NBC’s fall slate is quite set/already underway. So Magnum P.I. realistically won’t crack its next case until midseason, January at the earliest.
Magnum‘s final CBS run averaged 7.3 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating (including Live+7 playback), down just a tick from its Season 3 tallies (7.5 mil/0.8). Out of the 14 dramas that CBS aired last season, it ranked No. 9 in both measures. On NBC, however, that audience of 7.3 million would have ranked fifth among all dramas last season, trailing #OneChicago and La Brea but besting all of the Law & Orders and others.

NBC was smart here, nabbing a familiar and fairly strong series to bolster its lineup. I hope it is very successful. NBC could benefit from a boost. Its schedule pales from days gone by. Oh, the golden age of the web’s must-see smart comedies and highly regarded dramas.
It was a good decision on NBC’s part. The series already has a loyal, solid (& very vocal) fanbase that was instrumental in bringing it back. Fans followed the series when CBS moved it from Monday to Friday, & we’ll follow it to its new home on NBC:)
I’ve never met anyone who watches or likes this show. But it does seem to have a very vocal fan base. Let’s see if they can find this show on NBC.
Good for actor to get a break from saving the family farm, the family bakery, the family restaurant and reconnecting with his high school girlfriend after they broke up over a misunderstanding and haven’t seen each other in 20 years. The plot of many Hallmark movies.
Glad Magnum is coming back. Loyal fan!
What does this mean for Tim Kang? Why do they need another HPD colleague?
He’s still very much a part of the series, but his character was suspended indefinitely in the Season 4 finale. It’ll be interesting to see where they take Tim’s character coming into Season 5:)
So thankful that NBC came to the rescue for my favorite show Magnumpi! Patiently waiting for Season 5 to begin.
It looked pretty bleak for a while there after CBS canceled it
I have loved Michael Rady ever since he was Kostas and then he’s continually popped up on tv shows I watch. It’s intersting, he’s never a first season main character, he shows up partway through a show, but I always really enjoy his characters. I’ve watched Magnum since the begining so I’m excited to see him here.
Agreed, am a fan! He comes across v likable.
Nice! I’ve watched him in many a Hallmark show.
Is this the guy that Chicago Medâs Will was trying to take down with the defective medical devices?
Magnum should never have been, dropped especially when CBS kept shows whoâs eating weâre not as good..
Absolutely love this show. Cant wait to see season 5 and more… a Classic show that entertains today’s audience with its plot and cast. A Great move from NBC – well done !!!
Can’t wait to see new Season 5 of Magnum.
It’s funny. Many are congratulating NBC for saving “Magnum PI.” CBS didn’t want to cancel the show. Negotiations between CBS and Universal Television fell a part because of financial. NBC keeping the show alive is beneficial for NBCUniversal and Concast.
Will probably replace Quantum Leap on Mondays come January.
Glad to see it was picked up. Unfortunately we were in the cusp to stop watching it because they were pairing Magnum and Higgins up. I hope that doesn’t last.
Maria, don’t give up on it…even if they make Magnum and Higgins a couple. They could go the “Hart to Hart” route. That was a successful show and they were a married couple fighting and solving crimes.
Happy to hear that NBC swooped in and saw the value in Magnum PI â CBS really dropped the ball on this one.
Will be looking for its premiere date on NBC! ( … an aside, the CBS line-up of shows on Wednesday nights is a list of “Pathetic Shows Not-to-Watch” )
AWESOME. So happy to hear Magnum pi is back.
