The National Academy of Sciences announced the election of 120 members and 30 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Among those elected are four previous awards recipients:

Mary Droser, professor and department chair, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Riverside, who received the 2022 NAS Award in Early Earth and Life Sciences – Charles Doolittle Walcott Medal.

Michelle Monje, investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; and Milan Gambhir Professor of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology, Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, Calif. Dr. Monje received the 2023 Richard Lounsbery Award, and presented the Lounsbery Lecture on “Neuron-glial Interactions in Health and Disease: From Cognition to Cancer” at Vassar College on October 24.

Eric P. Skaar, Ernest W. Goodpasture Chair in Pathology and university distinguished professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tenn. Dr. Skaar is the recipient of the 2025 NAS Award in Molecular Biology. Watch him accept the award here.

Jerry X. Mitrovica, Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University, United States (Canada), who received the 2023 Arthur L. Day Prize and Lectureship.

Rotem Sorek, principal investigator, Department of Molecular Genetics, Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel). Dr. Sorek received the 2025 Selman A. Waksman Award in Microbiology. Watch him accept the award here.

 

 

2026 Awards: Call for Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the NAS Awards to be presented in 2026. Awards will be presented in a variety of fields including artificial intelligence, the physics of the Earth, computer science, mathematics, psychological and cognitive sciences, and more.

The Awards Program recognizes outstanding contributions to science and encourages innovative research. Unless otherwise specified, preference will be given to early-career scientists and those whose work hasn’t been recognized by other large prizes or awards.

Nominations will be accepted online through Monday, October 6, 2025.
