Raiders Captain Vows to Defend Vodafone Cup Title

Defending Vodafone Cup champions Vusu Raiders are on a mission to defend the title.
The bold challenge was made yesterday by Raiders captain Eremasi Batibasaga during the official launch of the 2025 Vodafone Cup at the Vodafone Fiji headquarters in Suva.
“It’s not easy to defend titles especially after 15 years,” Batibasaga told SUNsports.
“Our preparation is different this year, more focused. Our goal is clear, to win again.”
With the theme ‘Empowering Communities, Uniting Rugby League’, the launch highlighted not only the sport’s competitive edge, but its deep social impact across the islands, from remote villages to bustling towns. Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) board chairman Akuila Masi said rugby league is more than a sport in the country.
“It’s a way of life, a source of identity, and a bridge that connects our villages, our provinces, and our people,” he said.
“Each jersey worn represents a story, a community, and a dream. To Vodafone Fiji, thank you for your unwavering support. Your partnership allows us to create opportunities, build pathways and expand the reach of rugby league across the country.”
Fiji National Sports Commission chief executive Peter Mazey applauded FNRL and Vodafone for nurturing the game beyond the field.
“This competition does more than produce talented players, it builds pride, purpose and positive change. Across rural and urban Fiji, it creates opportunity for youth to dream and for families to rally together.”
Mazey stressed the importance of sport as a national development tool and commended FNRL’s inclusive approach, especially its focus on women and youth.
