Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Chris Sailer overcame a pregame groin injury to kick a 23-yard field goal in overtime and make up for a short miss at the end of regulation as No. 2 UCLA pulled out a thrilling 41-38 victory over 12th-ranked Oregon in a battle of Pac-10 Conference unbeatens.

The Bruins (5-0, 3-0 Pac-10) remained on top of the conference and beat an unbeaten Pac-10 foe for the second straight weekend, following their win over Arizona. Oregon (5-1, 2-1) came up short despite 172 yards on 25 carries from banged-up Reuben Droughns, who fumbled four times.

Sailer's winning kick came after UCLA's defense sacked Akili Smith twice for 12 yards in losses and forced an incompletion and an interception in the first round of downs for Oregon, which started on the UCLA 25 as part of the overtime provision.

Keith Brown carried twice for 13 yards on UCLA's first overtime plays. Fullback Craig Walendy and Brown each ran for a yard and Walendy ran for four more in the middle of the field before Sailer converted.

"It was amazing, we just sucked it up and I was just captured in the heat of the moment," said UCLA linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who had the sacks. "I knew we faced a fierce challenge (overtime) ahead of us -- can't even plan on having such a great defensive series."

UCLA's Cade McNown won his personal duel with Smith. McNown continually rose to the occasion and completed 20-of-36 passes for 395 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

"I'll have him on my team any day," Farmer said. "He's just such a great leader. He does things that never show up in the statistics. He's such an amazing player. I can't say enough for what he does for our team."

The left-hander vomited on the field in the third quarter but rebounded to go 9-of-13 for 202 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions thereafter. His 53 career TD passes are the most in school history, three more than Tom Ramsey.

"I have faith in Chris, he's a great kicker all around," McNown said. "My stomach was upset before the game and most of the game I was waiting for a long run so it (vomit) can come up and I can feel better."

Smith, who came in as the national leader in passing efficiency, was 15-of-37 for 221 yards, three TDs and one interception.

"We did not show the world anything today," a dejected Smith said. "We had a horrible game. If we had played up to our potential, we would've beaten these guys easy. We're now playing for the Rose Bowl, UCLA should be playing for the national championship."

The Bruins extended their school record with their 15th straight win, the best streak in the nation, one ahead of No. 3 Kansas State. UCLA has topped the 40-point mark in each of its games en route to its best start since opening the 1988 season with seven straight wins. It was their sixth straight win against a ranked opponent.

UCLA led by as much at 24-7 in the second quarter, when it lost starting tailback DeShaun Foster for the remainder of the game with a sprained left knee. But Smith rallied the Ducks with 24 straight points as they took the lead.

"The first half was my worst nightmare come true," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "I was pleased with the way we fought back and with our effort. We just turned the ball over too much. We had several injuries, some may be season-ending. I won't know for a while. I told my team we only had three hours to be down, (U)SC is next week. UCLA did not surprise us in the overtime, we just didn't perform well."

The game was loaded with fireworks but took on a frantic pace for the final few minutes.

In a 31-31 game, Droughns fumbled at the UCLA 40 and McNown threw a 60-yard scoring pass to Danny Farmer on the ensuing play to give the Bruins the lead with 2:36 left.

After a kickoff out of bounds, Smith drove Oregon 65 yards for the tying score, a two-yard pass to Damon Griffin with 22 seconds left. The pair kept alive the drive with a 19-yard pass play on 4th-and-16 to the 23.

Arash Emami's squib kickoff found the arms of tight end Randu Hakes, who returned it 14 yards to his own 42. With 17 seconds left, McNown heaved a long pass down the left sideline that was caught by Drew Bennett -- the backup quarterback -- at the 4. The Bruins did not use any of their three timeouts and allowed Sailer to try a 21-yard field goal from the left hash marks, but it went wide left.

"It came off my ankle a little bit and I hooked it left, it was my faught," Sailer said. "My groin injury is a slight strain. It was not feeling great before the game. It is a matter of time before it is full strength and it's been bothering me since the Washington State game."

"This should be worth two wins," UCLA coach Bob Toledo said. "I didn't say anything to Chris. I told the team prior to the big pass that we were going to win in overtime."

Farmer caught seven passes for 161 yards and Brown ran 19 times for 101 yards as UCLA piled up 547 yards of total offense to 438 for Oregon. Farmer is not looking ahead to a shot at the national title.

"We're not even thinking of the Fiesta Bowl, it is so far away," he said.

Griffin caught nine passes for 113 yards and Tony Hartley caught three for 68.

Foster started the scoring 6:03 into the game with a 51-yard TD catch from McNown and doubled the lead just over three minutes later with a four-yard rushing TD. Smith hit Jed Weaver with a 20-yard TD pass with 96 seconds left in the first quarter, but Sailer converted a 25-yard field goal and McNown threw a six-yard scoring pass to Farmer to give the Bruins a 24-7 edge midway through the second quarter.

Oregon began the comeback with a second left in the first half, when Smith found the end zone on a two-yard run. Droughns ran in from six yards with 8:26 left in the third quarter, Nathan Villegas booted a 27-yard field goal roughly four minutes later and Smith threw a 36-yard TD strike to Hartley with 12:13 left in regulation as the Ducks grabbed their first lead at 31-24.

Tailback Jermaine Lewis, who was suspended one game for his part off-field altercation two weeks ago, tied it for UCLA with a two-yard scoring run with 10:13 left. He carried seven times for 15 yards.
