displaying non-HDR images, videos as HDR #2800

Description

Describe the bug

when HDR is enabled in windows, all non-web wallpapers (all images and videos, regardless of actually being in HDR) are rendered as HDR

Image

this means they don't respond to windows's SDR related settings, like brightness

Image

and also results in them looking deepfried for a second when they load, and makes problems with non-hdr screen capture unavoidable (SDR screen capture software, screenshots, etc normally work fine on windows with hdr enabled, when brightness is set to 0 and you're only capturing SDR images)

windows's Auto HDR feature has no effect on this

To Reproduce

  • turn on HDR in windows
  • set an image or video wallpaper that isn't supposed to be in HDR

notably, if HDR isn't turned on when setting the wallpaper and you turn it on after, it renders as SDR

Expected behavior

i should note that the only video player plugin i've tried is the built in mpv, vlc and wmf remain untested
i tested an actual HDR jpeg, and it also displayed hdr, but not the right colorspace, too washed out
i tried an HDR jxr too, turns out lively doesn't support those

Screenshots/Video

turns out github won't let me attatch jxrs here

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100.4351)
  • various SDR jpeg, png, and an HDR jpeg

Additional context

the jxr file i tried to use for testing was captured with the windows xbox capture feature (win+alt+print screen)
the HDR jpeg was taken from greg benz's hdr gallery
