Description

The current icon used for the Exit Fullscreen action is a simple downward arrow. This can be misleading, as it visually resembles a “Download” or “Scroll Down” icon — a common metaphor across many interfaces. And a similar issue for Enter Fullscreen action.
Just switching to the Yaru fullscreen icon would fix the issue, but personally, I'm not a huge fan of the Yaru icon in this particular place - it's more of a zoom-in / enlarge / expand icon to me.
An icon set can and often does include multiple metaphors or styles for the same action. So I would much rather see a new fullscreen Yaru icon created using the same metaphor as Material.
Contrary to the current icon, this would be:
- Widely recognized (already used by major platforms like YouTube)
- Consistent with users’ expectations
I have not created an upstream issue yet (currently there's 15 icon related Yaru PRs pending). This is a very basic icon, but I cannot draw it, so tagging @Muqtxdir @ubuntujaggers 🪄 for their input.
