The work on Schon Circle Underpass (SCU) has been delayed by three months as a result of which it would be completed by October next year. This was stated by the Chairman of Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Vice Admiral Ahmad Hayat (Retd), while talking to newsmen on his visit at the site of Schon Circle underpass to review the progress of construction work.
The project, which was scheduled to open in June, would be opened in October 2006, he said, adding that the delay was caused due to shifting of utilities like underground lines of water, electricity cable, gas and telephone lines at the site of project.
The Rs 699 million mega project is being undertaken by Frontier Works Organisation under consultancy supervision of National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak).
The project is funded by Karachi Port Trust as part of the Tameer-e-Karachi Programme announced by President Pervez Musharraf.
The work on project commenced on December 26, 2004 and has so far completed by 22 percent.
The diversion of traffic is almost completed and one-way road from Mai Kolachi to railway crossing has been closed. First base coarse layer, being laid over the extendable road section, is in progress.
The shifting of SSGC, telephone, water lines from NLC to Railway crossing are to be carried out towards KPT Housing Society.
The excavation on left side is also in progress for the identification of services and improvements on sub-grade for the proposed road design.
The foundation base concrete of underpass is in progress on both sides. Underpass excavation, dressing and lean concerning between Do Talwar and Schon Circle is also in progress. Hand carpeting at the vicinity of Schon Circle and Boating Basin is underway. Two concrete batching plants have been installed. Casting of raft foundation panels is in progress to include the main bridge portion and fixing of reinforcements on retaining walls. The underpass of the project is likely to open by October 12, this year.
