This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
There's a gentrification subplot along with references to American imperialism and allegories concerning the militarization of the police. Susan Sarandon was involved with anti-Communist military interventions in Guatemala. George Lopez calls Batman a fascist. Blue Beetle makes a Mortal Kombat reference. Blue Beetle's grandma shouts "die imperialists!" as she guns down the private military/police force. Blue Beetle gets a billionaire girlfriend. Her corporation will save his neighborhood from gentrification, capitalism, and the military-industrial complex because corporations are now our (girl)friends. "Not all corporations or rich people are evil," says the 125 million dollar superhero movie produced by DC Studios and distributed by Warner Bros. Hollywood truly is the vanguard of the people. Marx and Lenin would definitely approve. I forgot the rest of the movie on the way out of the theater.
The best CW episode I’ve ever seen
One thing that becomes very clear from the very opening is how the Latino representation here is not some cheap tokenism, but like Black Panther and the Afro-American culture, the Latino culture is in this film's DNA from the heavy Span-glish writing, it’s icono and its geography. It’s even on the soundtrack, with the theme song being this hybrid of your average superhero epic score with some subtle Reggaeton beats.
The performances are very good. I’ve liked Xolo since discovering him on Cobra Kai (for which I interviewed him and featured him on my magazine cover), and he manages to draw you in with his natural charm. George Lopez steals the show from them from the very beginning as this…
