The inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen on the surface of the magnetic AP star HD 125248.
Abstract
The distribution of oxygen on the surface of the magnetic Ap star HD 125248 has been found to be strongly inhomogeneous. The average abundance of oxygen over a stellar hemisphere varies by a factor of 10 throughout the rotation cycle of the star. Oxygen appears to be more abundant close to the positive magnetic pole of HD 125248, like the rare earths and unlike chromium and silicon. This discovery contradicts previous claims that large inhomogeneities of oxygen abundance do not occur on the surface of magnetic Ap stars. It provides a new handle to tackle the question of the origin of the abundance peculiarities in these objects.
