New Continuum International Publishing Group
Established in London and New York
PRESS RELEASE 5th October 2000 CONTINUUM CELEBRATES ITS FIRST YEAR.
The Continuum International Publishing Group celebrates its first year in October 2000. Formed when Philip Sturrock joined
forces with Werner Mark Linz to buy out the academic and religious lists of Cassell and purchase the Continuum Publishing
Company of New York (from which the group takes its name), it has had a busy first year.
Much has been accomplished
· The distinguished publishing backlist has been joined by over 300 new titles including The Guerilla Film Makers
Handbook by Jones & Jolliffe, Ray & Jean Greek's Sacred Cows & Golden Geese, The Catechism of the Catholic Church (popular
edition), Michael Gray's monumental study of Bob Dylan - Song & Dance Man ?and a new edition of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the
Oppressed.
· Four acquisitions have been completed. The theology list of A & C Black, the long established Burns & Oates Catholic
imprint ("Publishers to the Holy See"); T & T Clark Ltd, a venerable and scholarly theological publishing in Edinburgh and the
Letts Higher Education textbook programme.
· The transatlantic vision of the group has been focused by the decision to relocate Dr. David Barker, cultural studies
editor, from London to New York.
· The UK office has moved from the north side of the Thames on Waterloo Bridge to the south, next door to Waterloo
Station (The Tower Building, 11 York Road, Waterloo, London, SE1 7NX, United Kingdom. Tel: 020 7922
0880 Fax: 020 7922 0881).
· The group's website - www.continuumbooks.com was launched both as a fully international electronic information source
on the group's new titles and its extensive backlist but also as an e-commerce facility which is already generating orders.
· The group's UK distribution subsidiary, Orca Book Services Ltd, has grown significantly taking on many new clients in
its first year.
Continuum enjoys financial support from the private equity house of Botts & Co. in London, UK, and continues to look for
compatible publishing companies or imprints in the UK and USA, that share its academic or scholarly focus in the humanities or
religion. Chairman Philip Sturrock commented:
"It's been an exciting and fast expanding year but our goals remain steady: to grow our international business, publishing
books of distinction of which we can be proud. We look forward to our second year confirming and enhancing our place as
leading theological and academic publishers. Watch out for John Allen's controversial study of Cardinal Ratzinger - The
Vatican's Enforcer of The Faith".

PRESS RELEASE 19 September 2000
The Continuum International Publishing Group acquires the Letts Higher Education List from the Granada Media Group.
The directors of The Continuum International Publishing Group Limited ("Continuum") are delighted to announce the acquisition
of the Letts Higher Education list from Letts Educational Limited and DP Publications Limited, both subsidiaries of Granada
Learning Limited.
Continuum with offices in London and New York, was established in October 1999 as a new independent publishing venture by
Philip Sturrock and Werner Mark Linz in cooperation with the private equity house of Botts & Company in London. Continuum
combines the former publishing programmes of the Cassell Academic and Religious Divisions and of the Continuum Publishing
Company of New York. Its strategic goals include rapid growth of its current publishing lists as well as acquisitions of
compatible publishing companies or imprints.
The Letts Higher Education list covers Business, Management, Accountancy, Computer Studies and a series of software guides. It
features several well known and established authors, including Gerald Cole, Terry Lucey and Alan Millichamp. Amongst the best
known titles are: Management Theory and Practice (Cole); Costing (Lucey); Management Information Systems 8th edition (Lucey),
Computer Science (French) and Business Maths and Statistics (Francis).
The list will complement Continuum's existing Business and Management list featuring such authors as Ray Wild (e.g.
Productions and Operations Management), David Evans (Supervisory Management), Alan Pizzey (Accounting and Finance), John
Spencer and Adrian Pruss (The Professional Secretary). Added to Continuum's other professional lists - Hospitality and
Tourism, Counselling, Education and Child Care - the Letts HE list will make a major contribution to the company's development
as a leading professional publisher.
The list will be managed by Anthony Haynes (Commissioning Editor) and Emma Cook (Assistant Editor). The books (which were
distributed for Letts Educational by TBS) will be distributed by Orca Book Services Limited, Continuum's wholly owned
subsidiary. Orders should be sent to Orca Book Services, Stanley House, 3 Fleets Lane, Poole, Dorset, BH15 3AJ (tel. 01202
665432; fax 01202 666219).
The acquisition of the Letts Higher Education list is Continuum's fourth acquisition in recent months, following the
acquisition of A & C Black's religious list and of two religious publishers, the Burns & Oates imprint and T & T Clark
Limited.
It demonstrates Continuum's commitment to its objective to lead the market in religious, academic and professional
publishing.
Although the newly acquired titles have sold primarily in the UK and Commonwealth, they will now be available in North America
from Continuum USA, 370 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10017-6550, USA (tel. + 1 212 953 5858; fax + 1 212 953 5944). American
distribution will be handled by Books International.

PRESS RELEASE 11th July 2000
The Continuum International Publishing Group Acquires T & T Clark.
The directors of The Continuum International Publishing Group are delighted to announce the acquisition of the old-established
Scottish publishing house T & T Clark with over 1000 titles in print.
The Continuum International Publishing Group, with offices in London and New York, was established in October 1999 as a new
independent publishing venture by Philip Sturrock and Werner Mark Linz in cooperation with the private equity house of Botts &
Company in London. Continuum International combines the former publishing programmes of the Cassell Academic and Religious
Divisions and of the Continuum Publishing Company of New York. Its strategic goals include rapid growth of its current
publishing lists as well as acquisitions of compatible publishing companies or imprints.
T & T Clark was founded in Edinburgh in 1821. Originally established as a legal publisher, it launched its first religious
book list in 1832. In these two areas T & T Clark have long held a position of pre-eminence and its prominent religious
authors have included Karl Barth, Martin Buber, C.E.B. Cranfield, Robin Gill, Aidan Nichols, Rowan Williams, Eberhard Jungel,
and Hans Urs Von Balthasar. In recent years, under the direction of Geoffrey Green, the publishing of T & T Clark has been
especially innovative, international and of high quality.
As part of the larger Continuum group T & T Clark will expand and maintain its own clear identity within its new parent
publishing group. Geoffrey Green will continue in his role as Publishing Director of the imprint and will remain in charge of
its editorial activities. He will work closely with Robin Baird-Smith, the Publishing Director with overall responsibility in
London for Continuum's religious books, and both Geoffrey Green and Robin Baird-Smith will report directly to Philip Sturrock,
the group Chairman.
With its existing imprints of Geoffrey Chapman, Mowbray and Burns & Oates, Continuum has become a major publisher for Anglican
and Roman Catholic audiences, especially through its liturgical publishing. With the acquisition of T & T Clark, Continuum
now includes an imprint which has been historically protestant and scholarly and which has also devoted much energy towards
publishing continental theology in translation. This tradition will be embraced enthusiastically by Continuum both in London
and New York.
The acquisition of T & T Clark is Continuum's third acquisition in recent months (A & C Black's religious list and Burns
& Oates have both recently joined the group) aimed at increasing the range of its religious publishing.

PRESS RELEASE 3rd July 2000
The Continuum International Publishing Group Acquires Burns & Oates.
The directors of The Continuum International Publishing Group are delighted to announce the acquisition of the old-established
publishing house of Burns & Oates with over 200 religious titles in print.
The Continuum International Publishing Group, with offices in London and New York, was established in October 1999 as a new
independent publishing venture by Philip Sturrock and Werner Mark Linz in cooperation with the private equity house of Botts &
Company in London http://www.bottscompany.com/. Continuum International combines the former publishing programmes of the
Cassell Academic and Religious Divisions and of the Continuum Publishing Company, and its strategic goals include rapid growth
of its current publishing lists as well as acquisitions of compatible publishing companies or imprints.
The directors wish to maintain the company's pre-eminent position as a publisher of religious books on both sides of the
Atlantic. As well as building a programme of exciting and original books in the areas of religion, theology, spirituality and
liturgy, Continuum welcomes other religious book imprints which will form part of its coherent plan for the future. Burns &
Oates is a perfect fit and will sit alongside Geoffrey Chapman, Mowbray and the recently acquired theological list of A & C
Black.
Burns & Oates, Publishers to the Holy See, was established in 1859 by James Burns to publish books for the Roman Catholic
community in this country. A convert and a friend of Cardinal Newman, Burns built up a successful business by publishing
liturgical books and official publications of the Catholic church but also by bringing out original books on theology and
spirituality.
In 1970 Countess Charlotte de la Bédoyère took most of its assets into the newly-formed Search Press. The recent retirement
of Countess de la Bédoyère and the rapid growth of Search Press' core business of craft books, have led the directors of
Search Press to feel that Burns & Oates would fare better under an owner able to devote more time and resources to it, so the
approach from Continuum International was welcomed as opportune.
The list of authors has been truly impressive, ranging from Newman himself, and Abbot Chapman in early years, to, in more
recent times, Hans Kung, Frederick Copleston, Thomas Merton and Karl Rahner. Burns & Oates has also been the publisher of
such great series as Copleston's incomparable History of Philosophy, Jedin's History of the Church and Butler's Lives of the
Saints, all monumental works of scholarship in their own right. Continuum will maintain Burns & Oates as an imprint. It has
a distinctive and distinguished character of its own, and it will be a lively imprint within Continuum's broad publishing
activities both in London and in New York.
Burns & Oates will become the direct responsibility of Robin Baird-Smith. Robin (whose maternal grandmother was a Burns)
joined Continuum as Publishing Director in November 1999 to direct its religious publishing and to launch a new,
thought-provoking, general trade list in Spring 2001.

PRESS RELEASE
1 MARCH 2000
CONTINUUM ACQUIRE A & C BLACK'S RELIGIOUS LIST
As part of its expanding religious book publishing, the Directors of The Continuum International Publishing Group are
delighted to announce the acquisition of A & C Black's religious book list.
Continuum was established recently as a new independent publishing venture combining the former Cassell
Academic and Religious lists with the Continuum Publishing Company in New York.
Continuum in London now has three publishing divisions. The Academic List, the Religious Book List (under the Geoffrey
Chapman and Mowbray imprints) and a new General Trade list to be launched in spring 2001. The strategy of the
religious publishing division to grow by organic growth and by acquisition makes A & C Black's list a perfect fit
for the new enterprise.
Under the direction of Robin Baird-Smith, Publishing Director, the religious book division intends to maintain its
leading position. Already strong in theological, spiritual and liturgical publishing, this acquisition
will further strengthen the company's position as market leaders in the field of biblical studies.
With A & C Black's list come some of the most distinguished names in post war biblical scholarship. C.K . Barrett,
C.F.D. Moule, J.N.D. Kelly, Floyd Filson, James Dunn, Hugh Montefiore and Morna Hooker.
Professor Morna Hooker is general editor of A & C Black's series of New Testament Commentaries which form
part of the acquisition. Professor Hooker was until recently Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity in the
University of Cambridge.
Also acquired is a strong back list of titles among which are Early Christian Doctrine by J.N.D. Kelly and The Shape of
the Liturgy by Gregory Dix.
Geoffrey Chapman and Mowbray already publish major works of Biblical scholarship such as The New Jerome Biblical
Commentary and McKenzie's Dictionary of the Bible as well as scholars such as C.F.D. Moule, Raymond Brown and William
Neil. The Continuum Biblical Studies series under the editorship of Dr. Steve Moyise was recently launched. With A & C
Black's commentaries the full range of Biblical scholarship is now represented on the list.
Continuum intend to build on A & C Black's list as a solid basis for the future. New titles are already under contract
and existing titles will be revised and updated as required. To celebrate this acquisition, Continuum will also
repackage and relaunch the Commentaries in order to reach the widest possible market throughout the
english-speaking world. From 1 March 2000 orders for these books should be sent to Orca Book Services Limited, Stanley
House, 3 Fleets Lane, Poole, Dorset, BH15 3AJ.
