Tokelau Map

The three Tokelau atolls, Atafu, Fakaofo, and Nukunonu, lie 500 kilometers north of Samoa in the central South Pacific.

These islands present a picture of utter tranquility - no roads, airports, large resorts, restaurants, or bars, just 1,500 Polynesia people living in harmony with nature as they have always done. Fishing, tending the coconut plantations, and raising pigs are the main pursuits.

A British protectorate since 1889, Tokelau fell under New Zealand administration in 1925. Today Tokelau falls under the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, although the administration is now run largely by local councils.

The only regular link to the islands is a supply ship from Apia, Samoa, which arrives once or twice a month. The small numbers of visitors stay in a small motel on Nukunonu or with local families. Tokelau is well off the beaten tourist track.
