KSN Digital Update: KSNC Great Bend to Go All-Digital in October

Tools

By Kevin White

KSN is making changes in operations which may impact your reception.

  • Most notable will be the fact that we will cease analog operations in Great Bend in October of 2008. A firm date has not been set, pending finalizing arrangements for tower crews and, of course, the weather. We are making the flash cut because we can’t find a good reason to spend $1,000,000 for a tower that would be used for only a few months. Therefore, we will continue to operate KSNC-DT on a low-powered, side-mount antenna on the existing tower. Cable operators can test reception capability of the side mount now. In October we’ll turn off the analog transmitter, remove the analog antenna; install a new digital antenna on top of the tower; and then turn on the KSNC digital transmitter at FULL power. This will take a couple weeks to accomplish.
  • KSN is working with operators in Northwest Kansas to find a solution to deliver a solid signal to the McCook-Oberlin market. Let me take this opportunity to apologize for the service issues we’ve had with the very old analog microwave system. KSNK-DT is currently operating on channel 12 at full power and will continue that operation when KSNK ceases analog operation on channel 8 next year.
  • KSN’s new low power digital station, KSNL, is in on the air in Salina and will start doing local news and weather August 25th, right after the Olympics. This signal is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than the current analog signal in Salina which will soon be turned off. Those of you who live around Salina will likely get a good off-air signal from this station and may want to try it, if you already haven’t.

KSNG will terminate analog service on February 17th, 2009. KSNG-DT will commence full power operations on channel 11 immediately after the analog operation is terminated.

KSNW will terminate operations on channel 3 on February 17th, 2009. KSNW-DT is already operating on channel 45 at full power.

If you’re within 50 miles of one of the KSN digital transmitters you should be able to get a good quality off-air signal. KSNW digital is transmitting an HD signal and we expect the rest of the state to see HD signals sometime in 2009.
