Important Issues: |
 | * The Railroad Commission, which oversees many aspects of the fossil fuel and surface mining industries in Texas, owes it to the public to make sure companies carry out operations in safe and clean ways.
* Modern directional drilling technology is such that there should be no need to issue drilling permits for surface locations near where people live and work.
* Pipeline inspections and pressure monitoring should be made more transparent; this should help reduce leaks and explosions much in the news lately.
* Operators should be required to prove that their practices are safe before starting new projects. This is especially true for the rapidly expanding practice of hydraulically fracturing shales for gas.
* Disposal wells of all sorts need to be kept clear of groundwater resources; old, abandoned wells need to be inspected and replugged where necessary. (More staff required; new jobs.)
* Uranium mining should be stopped immediately; we have plenty of enriched fissile material already in the form of bombs that should be converted to fuel for nuclear reactors first.
* Finally, we must begin the conversion of Texas energy sources to renewables; no matter how you feel about "peak oil" you have to admit that we are using fossil fuels faster than Mother Nature is making them. Sooner or later, we'll run out, so we might as well start getting ready. |

Why Vote For Me: |
 | 1. I give an option for voters who are concerned that the commission answers more to corporations than to ordinary citizens.
2. With 5% or more of the vote in this statewide race, the Green Party will be on the ballot in 2012, giving local green candidates the opportunity to run on the ticket and make a difference in grassroots democracy.
3. Send a message that you want to get past business as usual. |
