Stem cell transplantation (SCT) or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) involving the intravenous infusion of autologous or allogeneic stem cells from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood has been used to reestablish hematopoietic function in patients with damaged or defective bone marrow or immune systems. Additional uses of stem cells are increasingly making news headlines, not just on regulatory fronts but also because of the increasing number of discoveries that reveal possible roles in therapy and disease.
