Baggy Pants and the Nitwits

NBC - Premiered 9-11-77

On the old Laugh-In TV show, Ruth Buzzi played a homely, sour-faced spinster who was nevertheless constantly being hit on by a dirty old man played by Arte Johnson. In repeated sketches, the woman would be trying to mind her own business, usually on a park bench, and the old guy would come along and try to elicit her affections, whereupon she would bop him on the head with her purse.

Apparently someone in the NBC programming department thought this was a boffo idea for a children's cartoon, and thus Baggy Pants and the Nitwits was born. Buzzi's and Johnson's characters (here called Tyrone and Gladys) were the 'nitwits' of the title; the baggy pants were worn by a cat who stole Charlie Chaplin's clothes and routine and featured in silent cartoons (not even a laugh track) of his own. But wait - there's more! Tyrone was made a crimefighter for his and Gladys's cartoon adventures (owing to the 1970's rule stating that every third cartoon character must be made into a superhero or detective, no matter how ridiculous or unlikely it may seem); his codename was Agony Nine and he flew with the aid of a spring-loaded cane he called Elmo.
