Rev. C. V. WaughRev. C. V. Waugh was born in Virginia in 1848 and graduated from Richmond College in 1872. Shortly thereafter he was ordained to the Baptist ministry, preaching in several Virginia churches. Doctors advised him to move further south for his health, and when a call came from Gainesville's First Baptist Church in 1876, with a salary of $600 per year, he accepted. Apparently he was very successful during the first years, with the opening of a Sunday School and increased church membership. But the poverty of the Reconstruction years caused unrelenting financial struggles, and Rev. Waugh was repeatedly underpaid. Eventually he left First Baptist and turned to education. He served as professor of languages and philosophy at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College in Lake City, and in 1913 Florida adopted as its State Song a musical selection entitled "Florida, My Florida." The lyrics, by Waugh, were sung to the tune of "Der Tannebaum," the German air. "Swanee River" replaced "Florida, My Florida" as State Song in 1935. (click image to view larger size) |
