Soccer: Work begins on new Shamrock Rovers stadium

A new era for Shamrock Rovers football club begins this afternoon when they will turn the first sod at the club's new stadium in Tallaght at 3-45pm today. An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, will perform the honours at the ceremony. Rovers have been without a permanent home since they lost Milltown in 1988 and have been playing in various different venues since, including the RDS, Dalymount. Tolka Park and the Morton Stadium. The new ground in Tallaght will cost around £2 million to build and will have a 6,000 capacity. It is hoped the pitch will be ready for the start of the new season.
