General Information

Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI) is registered with the Department of Education and its programmes are accredited by the Council on Higher Education. In addition to offering its own registered and accredited programmes, MGI has, for many years, been an official UNISA tuition centre where students receive on-campus, face-to-face tuition towards UNISA programmes.

At MGI, we believe in building a healthy learning environment by offering individual academic attention for students to reach their full potential and an exciting range of social, cultural, and recreational activities.

Our Student Affairs Unit is on campus to provide support and service to all our students.

MGI students gain practical experience through our guest speaker programmes, practical assignments, field trips, and various projects such as the Business Advice Centre and Law Clinic. Our sporting facilities include basketball, netball, football, a swimming pool, tennis, and volleyball.

We wish you all the best with your studies, and trust that you will have an unforgettable experience at MGI.

Brief history

Midrand Graduate Institute was first known as Midrand Campus. Established in 1989, the institution soon developed an outstanding reputation for its innovative and dynamic hands-on approach to teaching and learning, producing graduates who are competitive, skilled, and in demand in the working environment.

Building on the successes of Midrand Campus, later known as Midrand University, the institution soon attained higher status in the private higher education environment by developing into Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI) - one of the first private university-level, degree-conferring institutions in Southern Africa.

Besides offering its own degrees and diplomas, MGI has a long history of providing top quality tuition geared towards the qualifications of other institutions.

Registration and accreditation status

MGI is registered with the Department of Education, under the Higher Education Act No. 101 of 1997, as a private higher education institution.

One of the requirements of this registration is that all of the programmes offered by MGI must be accredited by the

Council on Higher Education’s Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC). The purpose of this accreditation is, first and foremost, to protect students against poor quality programmes as well as to maintain the credibility of

qualifications. The accreditation model of the HEQC entails a rigorous programme accreditation process.

A further requirement for registration is that all MGI’s programme offerings have to be registered on the National

Qualifications Framework (NQF) by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

MGI is proud of the fact that all of its programme offerings are accredited and registered.

Quality assurance

In keeping with MGI’s policy of ensuring that the institution’s qualifications are of a high standard and quality, and that they compare favourably with similar qualifications offered elsewhere, leading academics from other South African higher education institutions moderate all of MGI’s final examinations. Not only are MGI’s final year examinations moderated in this way, but all programmes benefit from such quality control measures. This enables MGI to receive constant feedback from academics at other institutions as to the standard and content of the programmes. In addition to maintaining quality standards, MGI programmes are exposed to the broader academic environment, thus entrenching the institution’s reputation as a reliable higher education institution.

When students graduate from MGI and enter postgraduate fields at other institutions, they do so in the knowledge

that MGI programmes are known and accepted by these institutions.

Educational links

MGI is well known for its tradition of established partnerships with other universities and higher education institutions both locally and abroad. These partnerships are rooted in a common commitment to provide high-quality, broad, and relevant education. They add strength and diversity to MGI’s programmes and provide many opportunities for students.

MGI’s association with UNISA

Midrand Graduate Institute has been offering tuition towards UNISA degrees since 1989. A range of modules is offered across the board in various faculties, ensuring that UNISA students add value to their degrees with lectures and interaction with fellow students.

Academic programmes

All of MGI’s full- and part-time academic programmes are selected, designed, and developed to meet the demands of prospective employers and to accommodate further studies.

Programmes enable graduates either to enter the workplace immediately after qualification, or to further their studies at other local and international universities, colleges, and schools of their choice.

Research

MGI recognises research as an essential component of any institution of higher learning. Therefore, participation in research and research-related activities is actively encouraged.

The research conducted at MGI is not only directed towards the systematic and scientific quest for new knowledge, but also entails staff development, the development of course material, as well as action and contract research. MGI’s researchers participate in national and international conferences, symposia, and consortia. Research findings are published in scientific journals, the mainstream media, and subject-related journals.

Language policy

MGI’s language of tuition is English. The institution’s policy of inclusiveness allows access to students whose mother tongue is not English. MGI endeavours to assist students by offering specialised English language skills programmes, support, and training.

In collaboration with the ACE Foundation, MGI offers English courses to enhance English proficiency as well as to prepare students who are speakers of foreign languages to study their programmes in English.

Rules and regulations

A comprehensive set of rules and regulations booklets, outlining general student rules, as well as faculty-specific rules, is available from the Student Advisory Unit. Current editions of these booklets are issued to new and returning students at the beginning of each academic year, and are also freely available to prospective students.
