Bayer Leverkusen 1-3 Barcelona: Xavi (injured) and Gerard Pique (not selected) miss out for the Champions League holders, who are looking to become the first back-to-back winners of the competition, coming up against a Leverkusen side who are missing Michael Ballack
Chile international Alexis Sanchez makes his first start in the Champions League for Barcelona, and it's a day to remember as he latches on to Lionel Messi's flicked pass before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the Leverkusen net late in the opening half
Despite being on the back foot for much of the game, Leverkusen draw level. On-loan Tottenham defender Vedran Corluka escapes the attention of full-back Eric Abidal before chipping in a delightful cross for Michal Kadlec to head home
The champions show their class as Sanchez bags his second by rounding the goalkeeper before tucking home, and the magician Messi slides in to add a third late on as the Catalan outfit take a strong advantage going into the second leg
Lyon 1-0 Apoel: The French side are in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the ninth season running, and are heavy favourites against a Apoel side who are the first Cypriot outfit to get this far in the competition. They go behind to a deflected effort from Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette
The European competition attracts an international flavour with plenty of Brazilians in action for both sides, but Michel Bastos (centre), William and Marcinho are unable to add to the scoreline, with Remi Garde's Lyon taking a narrow lead into the second leg
West Ham 1-1 Southampton: The top two in the Championship face-off with the Hammers looking to extend their lead at the summit. They're on course to doing that as Mark Noble slots home a penalty for the home side
But Matt Taylor was dismissed for the Hammers before they scored and, after the break, the pressure tells on the home side as Southampton centre back Jos Hooiveld prods home an equaliser for the visitors
Watford 3-2 Leicester: David Nugent shows his opponents no love in the first-half, bagging twice for the Foxes, but Sean Dyche's men are not to be outdone with goals from Adrian Mariappa and Sean Murray keeping them in the game before Craig Forsyth grabs the winner
Burnley 2-0 Barnsley: Both teams are going steady in the league this season but the Clarets could get to within touching distance of the play-off spots with a victory. Goals from Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Austin ensure they collect the three points they are looking for
