Schalke boss Jens Keller: "We knew that Real would use the space we would give them after they scored the opener and they simply punished us for every mistake we made. We are a young team that still has lots to learn at this level.
"We made too many simple mistakes. We had a good start, played bravely until we conceded the opener. A mistake allowed Real to score the opener but we immediately had the chance for the equaliser.
"These types of chances don't come along that often against a side like Real. When you make that many mistakes against Real they will punish you without a second thought."

You don't score as many goals as Cristiano Ronaldo without seeing plenty of the ball in the final third. He had 10 shots tonight - the same as Schalke's team combined.

"In the end it could be a good result, we should play like we did in the second half. We were too deep in the first half.
"In every attack we lost four players during the first 20 minutes, they were counter-attacking us every time, and that's impossible against Chelsea. I brought off Izet Hajrovic, he didn't have a bad game, but we needed another midfielder. 1-1 is a good result and we have a chance."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports:
"This is Turkish football, it's very emotional, Galatasaray are a big club with big players and it was not easy. The first half we had chances to kill game, I am not criticising our strikers but they had chances to do the second goal, and that would have changed the game.
"In the second half they put pressure on us, they had attacking full-backs and powerful strikers, and they put pressure on us. Fernando Torres and Andre Schurrle were in trouble in the second half, they were a bit exhausted. But we were comfortable, until we conceded at the corner.
"I can't complain, we had problems with Mikel and Oscar, and the players we could not pick for the Champions League, but the performance of the players in a difficult place to play was amazing. I just ask for 10% of what this stadium gave Galatasaray when we play in three weeks.
"It's better to be 1-1 than 0-0, this result is better than the 0-0 we had in the first minute, it's not a bad result but they are an experienced team with good strikers and we will have work to do."

"Its half time, but I would not say it a great result, they are a strong team so we are a bit disappointed. When it's 1-0 with the atmosphere you know they will be in the game. It's one of the atmospheres you play football for, so credit to their fans. We sat back a little bit bit and did a few things that were disappointing, so we know we have work to do at home."
On Didier Drogba:
"He is a great lad, it was an honour to play against him, and to play with him for years. We'll have to watch him back at the Bridge."

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged two more goals tonight, and his form over the past few years is well worth flagging up.
He now has 61 goals in the Champions League, the third player to score 60+ goals in the Champions League behind Raul (71) and Lionel Messi (66).
Since the start of 2012-13, Ronaldo (15) has scored more Champions League away goals than Barcelona (13).
And Ronaldo has scored 31 goals in his last 25 Champions League games. To summarise - he's decent.

What a goal! It means precisely zero in the context of the tie but former Real man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar can at least tell his grandkids about this one. meeting a cross from the left with a 20-yard volley which thrashes in off the underside of the crossbar.
Score a goal like that and you'd normally have dancing in the streets. Pity it came at 6-0 down.

Big, big chance for Fernando Torres to double his tally for the night and take Chelsea a huge stride closer to the last eight.
The striker collects a low precise pass from Eden Hazard that gives him a clear run at goal. Two Gala defenders chase him down and put him under pressure but he still gets his shot off from 14 yards. Fernando Muslera makes a decent save but Torres really ought to have scored.

Ridiculous. Poor Joel Matip has been turned into a pretzel by the genius of Cristiano Ronaldo, who continues to score at Wayne Gretzky levels.
Gareth Bale sweeps an early pass out to Ronaldo on the left-hand corner of the penalty area, Ronaldo throws three quick stepovers to leave Matip inside out before the Real Madrid number seven crashes in with his left foot.

What's gone on here then? Galatasaray have the ball in the net as Burak Yilmaz thumps home off the post but the whistle had already gone.
John Terry conceded a throw-in, but kept hold of the ball as he retreated back to the penalty area which meant that we had two balls on the pitch when the home side took the throw quickly.
Terry is booked for the cheek, but Galatasaray are furious, Bizarre.

Chelsea are the only English team to have beaten Galatasaray on their own soil in the Champions League, back in October 1999. It was a 5-0 tanking though, which remains the Blues' biggest away win the competition.

You may have noticed reports today that the position of West Brom boss Pepe Mel is already under threat despite only being appointed on 9 January.
West Brom have now released a statement. Not what I would describe as a ringing endorsement of Mel's position.
In it sporting & technical director Richard Garlick said: "At present, we are going through a period of transition, which is natural following the appointment of a new Head Coach.
"There is also a lot of frustration at our league position and run of form. I would be more concerned if there wasn't.
"Various meetings have been held within the football department over the past few days to discuss our current situation and what needs to be done to improve results in our final 11 games.
"The discussions have proved constructive. There has been a lot of soul searching and it is clear everyone has a real hunger and desire to keep the club in the Premier League.
"Pepe, the coaching staff and players will now do everything in their power to achieve this common goal."

When I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well." John Hartson is not impressed with what Van Persie had to say:
"I've been in football for over 20 years, and I have never heard such a player say 'you're moving into my space or my zones'. I think it's nonsense, Sir Alex would have pulled him aside and said, 'this is a joke', going to a Dutch reporter and slaughtering your team mates like that. For me, that shows there are cracks in the team. It's poor from Van Persie, you would expect better from a striker that was pivotal to United's title campaign last season."

And here's another one - the ongoing rivalry between Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho. There has been an uneasy relationship between the pair ever since the Portuguese boss replaced Mancini at Inter Milan in 2008.
And it has continued this week. Mancini claimed some of the credit for Inter's 2010 Champions League win under Mourinho - quickly dismissed by the Chelsea boss.

Former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley is the only manager to lift the European Cup on three occasions, guiding the Reds to wins in 1977, 1978 and 1981.
Jose Mourinho is one of 18 managers to win it twice so far, alongside such luminaries as Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough and Carlo Ancelotti.
But nobody has lifted it for three teams. Mourinho is also the only man to reach the semi-finals with four sides, reaching the last four with Porto (2004), Chelsea (2005 and 2007), Internazionale (2010) and Real Madrid (2011, 2012 and 2013).
Will it be five in a row for Jose? He's basically the Roger Federer of European football.

In tonight's other game, Schalke manager Jens Keller has said that his side need "a little miracle" to progress at Real Madrid's expense. Mind games? Perhaps, but it could be just plain realism. Real Madrid, top of La Liga, are unbeaten in their last 26 matches and have Cristiano Ronaldo available after a three-match league ban following his red card in the draw with Athletic Bilbao at the start of the month.
Schalke meanwhile endured a disappointing goalless draw with Mainz at the weekend. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who spent a short and not very sweet seven months at Real Madrid in 2009, is likely to start up front for the Germans and will have more motivation than most to cause an upset.
