Strategies and More Information

Classification - Seed Pokémon

First Anime Appearance: Episode 051- Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden

First Manga Appearance - The Electric Tale of Pikachu Vol. 3 Chapter 9: I'm Your Venusaur

Since Venusaur got its newfangled ability, Chlorophyll, in Generation V, it has become a potent Pokémon all sun teams should consider to use. 80/83/100 defenses are not bad for a Pokémon, giving it some bulk to shrug off a few attacks. A 100 Special Attack (SpA) stat to fire off SolarBeam and other choice moves is very painful for the opponent. But the best thing is that under sunny conditions, Venusaur gets double its Speed due to its Chlorophyll ability, and it can also set up as a mixed (Attack and Special Attack) sweeper with Growth, which SHARPLY increases BOTH Attack (Atk) and SpA under sun. This makes it a fearsome Pokémon under sun.

Special Attacking Set

Venusaur is a beast under sun, with its abilities, and its 100 base SpA is something to watch out for. Growth is the set up move of choice, being able to double SpA in one move. Giga Drain is the second choice move, being able to suck your enemies dry after a boost from Growth. If you are worried about damage, you can replace this with SolarBeam, which hits like a tank with set up. Sludge Bomb does not have the best attacking type, but it is a secondary STAB, and will still hit like a truck. The fourth move preferred is Sleep Powder, which puts your enemies in dream land, making them vulnerable to a STAB Giga Drain/SolarBeam. Venusaur is boosted by its ability, which doubles its Speed under sun.

Trivia

  • In the first three generations, Venusaur had five petals in his sprite. In the fourth and fifth generation the sprite has six petals.
  • Venusaur is the only generation 1 starter to feature a gender difference.
  • Like Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, Venusaur cannot be traded on the GTS in Black/White without a nickname due to the censor in place.
  • Name Origin: Venus (as in a venus fly trap - a notoriously dangerous plant) + Saur (a dinosaur-like creature) = Venusaur!
