Super League: Wakefield Trinity 36-10 Huddersfield Giants - Randell grabs treble as Wakefield end losing run

Tyler Randell grabbed a hat-trick as Wakefield Trinity halted a five-match losing run in Super League with a stylish win over Huddersfield Giants.

Trinity trailed to Alex Mellor's score against the run of play, but Randell replied and although Louis Senior put Giants ahead, the game turned when the visitors had Aaron Murphy sin-binned.

Randell's second try made it 16-10 at the break and Wakefield eased home.

Randell completed his treble and Jordan Crowther and Jacob Miller also crossed.

Huddersfield, who have now lost four in a row, had defended resolutely against strong early home pressure but despite taking the lead they ended up being well beaten.

Randell levelled the scores with his first try this term and they went further ahead thanks to the reliable kicking of Danny Brough.

And although Senior went over under the posts for Giants after smart work by Lee Gaskell, Murphy's yellow card for preventing a restart proved costly and handed the initiative to the home side.

Randell scored his second with just three seconds of the first period remaining following a delightful offload by Ryan Hampshire.

The second half was all Wakefield with Brough teeing up Crowther for the third home try, Miller racing 40 metres to touch down and Randell completing his treble from a restart late on.

Wakefield boss Chris Chester said: "We were good value for our win because it has been challenging these past six weeks and coaching can be a lonely place at times.

"But I couldn't be more proud of the players and Tyler Randell was outstanding - he's telling all the lads it's his first hat-trick.

"We just seemed to want that game more than the opposition and I couldn't be more pleased.

"That win was key and we said if we didn't win we would have thrown away our top-five hopes.

"I didn't like saying it was a must-win game to the players but in my head I knew it was."

Huddersfield coach Simon Woolford said: "It's not good enough. We gave too many penalties away when Wakefield were coming out of their end of the field.

"We would have some good defence and then all the good work would be undone with poor discipline - it's the same story.

"It's not good enough for our fans, it's not good for our owner Ken Davy who does a lot for this club, and we're in a predicament now where we've got to start thinking about fighting for survival.

"We played against a team who were low on confidence but we played them back into form. At the moment, the gap between our good and bad is too big. Forget the play-off semi-finals."
