Chorley 2-0 Derby: Non-league side beat makeshift Rams in FA Cup

Non-league Chorley beat a decimated Derby County to reach the FA Cup fourth round for the first time.

A Covid-19 outbreak meant the Championship club were without their entire first team squad, boss Wayne Rooney and most of their under-23 side.

Nine of their starting 11 were making senior debuts and they fell behind when Connor Hall headed in from close range.

Chorley wrapped up victory six minutes from time when Mike Calveley stretched to divert Elliot Newby's cross home.

The National League North side, who beat 2013 winners Wigan in the first round before seeing off another League One side, Peterborough, can now look forward to Monday's fourth and fifth-round draw after overcoming a second-tier side, albeit one unrecognisable from their usual line-up.

Experience beats exuberance

Derby's youngsters had the game's first opening when Cameron Cresswell got in behind the home defence but Magpies goalkeeper Matt Urwin did well to deny him.

However, they soon found themselves behind when a deep corner caused chaos and Hall eventually headed home from two yards out.

The youthful visitors competed well throughout but struggled to retain possession and were fortunate not to fall further behind before the break when Will Tomlinson hit the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Derby goalkeeper Matt Yates then made a fine low save to keep out Hall's shot in the opening moments of the second half.

The Rams grew in confidence as the game wore on but could not create a chance of note and Calveley ended the contest with another close-range finish.

Chorley goalscorer Connor Hall told BT Sport:

"It is an unbelievable feeling. It is fantastic for the club - that will keep them going for a while. I'm so happy.

"We knew they were not going to be a pushover. We started well and got the early goal but we had to keep pushing because 1-0 is a dangerous scoreline but when the second goal went in it was unbelievable.

"I obviously want to draw one of the biggest teams in England - Newcastle. I am a Newcastle fan!"

  • There comes a point where you say, ok Derby only had youngsters playing but these have been scouted , given contracts, had professional training, the best fitness techniques ; these players are possible Premier League stars of the future. They should still see off a non-league side. So well done Chorley!!!

      Not at all. Experience is huge. The top non-league sides aren't bad, they're just not as good as the league clubs. The difference between bad Championship teams and National League teams isn't massive. I saw Birmingham lose to Kidderminster in the 90s, they were actually better than us.

    Many teams are having to field youth teams. This is not the magic of the FA Cup.
    In addition, all football I have seen on TV involves hugs at the end of the game from the opposing players and opposing managers holding conversations with there heads less than 18 inches apart!!!

  • I'm proud of the Derby players out there today you've done your club proud. Well done to Chorley who have also done themselves proud. The FA though should hang their heads in shame for letting this, the Villa v Liverpool and many others go ahead in a lockdown that is out of control and with the NHS struggling.

Derby u23 have a long way to go to establish themselves as pro footballers, would go as far to say possibly 2 would make the rest will struggle to play at the standard of league Chorley play in.

      With respect teams could follow the protocols to the letter and be disadvantaged through fixture backlogs caused by the opposition who have caught the virus in the group. You should put in place strict protocols of course but nevertheless it is highly virulent disease. My final point is that some clubs are testing and some are not if you take all the club's across the elite grade levels.

      They are running around a football pitch, not around the streets. Football is entertainment. We can't just stare at the walls for the next six months.

  • Well done Chorley, I hope they get a big PL tie in the next round. Can’t complain too much, not even our first choice u18s and u23s as most of the decent players train with the first team and so we’re ruled out as well. Safe to say most of the Derby players who started won’t be troubling our senior team any time soon, and that’s saying something!

  • I don't thins is too much of a shock in the present circumstances. Teams are struggling to make the normal league season with all the games let alone the FA Cup. And whilst the nation is under lockdown, why is football 'surviving'? Them non-league dressing rooms you are packed-in like sardines!
