In the Pokemon world, not even your dreams are safe, as multiple Pokemon are able to mess with your dreams for both good and evil purposes. These Pokemon can either cause nice dreams or usher in nightmares, with some Pokemon even intentionally putting you to sleep in order to eat the dreams you produce.
It’s interesting to consider how, in the Pokemon universe, Pokemon are important to every aspect of life, with the relationship between people and Pokemon not even stopping when you close your eyes to rest. Of course, if you’re prone to nightmares, having a Pokemon like Munna on hand to eat them might be a positive.
7 Plagued By Visions: Mismagius
The Magical Pokemon Mismagius has a mage-inspired look that complements its magical abilities. It can cause horrifying hallucinations, according to multiple of its Pokedex entries. In the Pokemon anime episode Malice In Wonderland!, Mismagius was shown to be able to put people to sleep in order to make them see frightening visions.
Falling victim to Mismagius’ sleep-inducing spells is sure to be unpleasant, as it can use its ability to manipulate your dreams without you even realizing you’re asleep. If you hear a Mismagius muttering curses, you’d better get away as soon as possible.
6 Eater Of Dreams: Munna
The Generation Five Psychic-type Pokemon Munna has an adorable pink and purple appearance that resembles an incense burner. As expected from a Pokemon with the Dream Eater classification, Munna has the ability to do just that, eating both good dreams and nightmares. It’s known to appear before those having bad dreams to relieve them of their nightmares.
Munna is able to expel Dream Mist from the spot between its eyes, with the mist being either pink or black, depending on whether the dream it ate was good or not. It was this Dream Mist that caused Team Plasma to attempt to capture it in Pokemon Black and White, hoping to use the mist for nefarious purposes.
5 Hungry For Dreams: Hypno
Hypno, known as Sleeper in Japan, is a bizarre-looking bipedal Pokemon that carries a circular pendant, which it uses to hypnotize people, swinging it back and forth to put them to sleep and then digesting their dreams once it has done so.
Hypno’s abilities can be used for both good and evil intentions. In Pokemon Ultra Moon, its Pokedex entry says that Hypno can help doctors to put patients to sleep. However, Pokemon Moon says that it kidnaps anyone having a good dream, most likely hypnotizing them in order to feast on their dreams over and over again.
4 Double-Edged Sword: Musharna
Musharna evolves from Munna through the use of a Moon Stone. Known as the Drowsing Pokemon, Musharna is often depicted sleeping and, similar to its previous evolution Munna, it has a spot on its forehead that can excrete Dream Mist.
It also has the ability to eat people’s dreams, including their nightmares. However, its Pokedex entry in Pokemon Sword says, “your nightmares will become a reality” if you get too close to the black mist pouring from its body. Perhaps it’s best not to approach Musharna right after you wake up from a nightmare.
3 Finally, A Good Dream: Cresselia
The Psychic-type legendary Pokemon Cresselia is the counterpart to Darkrai. Unlike Darkrai, which is said to cause nightmares, Cresselia is associated with pleasant dreams - falling asleep holding one of Cresselia’s feathers is said to bring 'joyful dreams,' according to various Pokedex entries.
The dichotomy between Cresselia and Darkrai is represented through their appearances, as, in opposition to Darkrai, Cresselia’s design is evocative of a crescent moon, featuring a pink, yellow and blue color scheme. If you had to pick a Pokemon to mess with your dreams, Cresselia is the best option.
2 Dream Connoisseur: Drowzee
Known as the Hypnosis Pokemon, Drowzee can put people and Pokemon to sleep in order to eat their dreams. Much like the Pokemon Munna and Musharna, Drowzee resembles a tapir and is, in fact, inspired by the mythological baku, a being that is able to digest dreams. Its Pokedex entry in Pokemon FireRed even references the legendary baku, suggesting that Drowzee is a descendant of this creature.
Drowzee’s Pokedex entries state that not only is it able to eat its enemy’s dreams, but also can “tell what people are dreaming by sniffing with its big nose.” It can show you the dreams it has previously eaten if you sleep beside it, but it won’t help you with your nightmares, as it believes bad dreams taste sour.
1 Terror Of The Night: Darkrai
The counterpart of Cresselia, the Dark-type mythical Pokemon Darkrai is well known to cause nightmares. In terms of appearance, Darkrai certainly lives up to the nightmare association, as its entire body is smoke-like, with a singular blue eye visible on its face. It’s easy to imagine Darkrai materializing from the darkness to inhabit your dreams, plaguing your sleep with terrible nightmares.
In Pokemon Shining Pearl, its Pokedex entry says that, according to folklore, Darkrai appears on 'moonless nights' to 'make people see horrific nightmares.' It’s chilling to imagine exactly what Darkrai causes people to see, especially with a child in Pokemon Platinum being tormented by visions of Darkrai in their sleep to the point that they can’t wake up.
