Obituary for Earl Tilman Gainey
Earl Tilman Gainey, 87, of Lancaster, SC, peacefully entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 21, 1937 in Lancaster, SC to the late Henry Gainey and the late Edna White Gainey. Earl was a pillar of his community, a devoted family man, and a dedicated servant to his faith and fellow man.
Educated in the Lancaster County School District, Earl's life was a testament to hard work, leadership, and service. He began his professional journey as a truck driver for Springs Industries and later served as a driver for the Lancaster Area Ride Service (LARS), where he was beloved by all who knew him.
Earl's deep faith was evident in his many roles at his church, Mt Zion AME Zion where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board, Preachers Steward Board, Superintendent of Sunday School, and President of the Senior Choir. He was also a proud and committed Membership Chairman for the NAACP, advocating for equality and justice throughout his life.
Earl had a zest for life and a variety of passions. He enjoyed playing golf, riding motorcycles, and creating beautiful music with his guitar and his voice. As a member of the Royal Charms, the Gladiolas, and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, he shared his love of music far and wide.
His dedication to community extended beyond his church, as he served on the Board of Trustees for the Pardue Housing Complex and was appointed by the Honorable Mayor Joe Shaw to the Human Relations Commission for the City of Lancaster.
Earl was a proud Mason and a 33rd-Degree Shriner, further exemplifying his commitment to uplifting others.
Earl was united in holy matrimony to the late Barbara Ann Stover Gainey for 45 beautiful years, and their union was a shining example of love and devotion. Together, they built a legacy of faith, family, and service that will be cherished by all who knew them.
Earl leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Earl Donnell Gainey (Ann) of Lancaster, SC, Demarcus Gainey of Lancaster, SC, a sister, Edna Foster of Lancaster, SC, a brother, Johnny Ray Gainey of Lancaster, SC, brother-in-law, John Stover (Kathy) of Lancaster, SC, special friend, Gloria Frazier, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Stover Gainey and two brothers and one sister.
Earl Tilman Gainey's legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. His laughter, wisdom, and unwavering kindness leave a mark that time cannot erase. May he rest in eternal peace.
