Alumnus Allen Blume (Class of 1955) and his wife Phyllis have made a gift of $1 million to Elmhurst College.
The gift will enhance an existing endowed scholarship fund, benefiting full-time Elmhurst College students with financial need. Elmhurst College President Bryant Cureton announced their generous donation in October, during a Homecoming awards ceremony.
“When combined with their previous gifts to the Blume Scholarship Fund,” President Cureton said, “the total of $1.25 million makes this Elmhurst College’s largest endowed scholarship.” The Blume Fund will provide tens of thousands of dollars each year in scholarship money.
The Blumes wish is “to make a difference in the recipients’ life-experience opportunities,” and also to help attract and retain quality students for Elmhurst by making college more affordable.
Dr. Blume is president of the Minneapolis-based West Star Foundation and a retired minister in the United Church of Christ. A former Elmhurst trustee (now an honorary life trustee), Blume has been saluted with some of the College’s most prestigious honors, including the Founders Medal and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. He and his wife reside in Reno, Nev.
