U.S. Congressman, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice. After graduating from Princeton College in 1808, he studied law in New Haven, Connecticut, was admitted to the bar in 1810 and commenced to practice law in Savannah, Georgia. During the War of 1812, he served as an officer in the Georgia Hussars, U.S. Army. After the war, he was served as a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives (1815-16) and Mayor of Savannah, (1817-19). He also was judge of the court of common pleas and oyer-terminer of Savannah (1820-22), plus judge of the superior court of Savannah (1822-28). In 1829, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first, Twenty-second, and Twenty-third Congresses, until 1835. After leaving Congress, he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1835 and served until his death. During World War II, the liberty ship SS James M. Wayne, was named in his honor.
