I had the pleasure of beta-reading this book a couple months ago. Now while I don’t usually gravitate toward stories with dragons…Tarnished blew me away.
It had everything I loved, from badass women, adventure across new lands, and a sapphic bodyguard-princess romance.
The prose is gorgeous and I found myself knee-deep in the worldbuilding, and invested in the characters’ growth. The antagonists are hateable, but three-dimensional. All of the POV characters are compelling.
The LGBTQ rep is also fantastic.
Highly recommend if you love high fantasy, sapphic romance, dragons, and (actually) strong female characters!
TARNISHED is such a beautifully crafted sapphic high fantasy following a runaway princess with magic and her guard (and another sister princess and guard duo!). When I tell you this book immersed me in its scenery and dialogue, I was seated and excited there’d be more to come from Eberhart. Badass women with swords and flames? Yes please. This story will change your life in 2025, and if you’re not a big reader of high fantasy, may I ask you to reconsider and read TARNISHED? It’s so accessible and set in a queer normative world with a ton of rep. You will not regret it! Oh, and did I mention dragons? Thank you to Erica Eberhart and the publisher for the ARC!
This was the culmination of years of writer's block with the barest inkling of an idea of a girl who had a deadly secret, and the desire for someone to say "no matter what you are, I love you all the same" always flitting through my head. Sometimes it takes a long time for an idea to take form and I'm grateful I had the support and encouragement of family, friends, and fellow writers to stick with it until the story was ready to be born.
I wrote this book for myself and anyone else who always saw themselves in both the knight and the princess of fairy tales. I wrote it for anyone who wanted to love both characters as well. I wrote it for people who grew up believing one thing and realized that not all they were taught was truth. We're all growing and learning and trying to be better while accepting ourselves for who we are.
It's taken years to get here and I'm so glad I made it. I'm forever grateful this story found my brain and allowed me to write it down, I'm forever grateful to my early readers, and I hope you future readers enjoy it too.
I was immediately pulled in by the characters and setting of Tarnished. Traveling through autumn and all the locations was beautiful. Caitriona is such a sweetheart and watching her interact with Ailith was a satisfying slow burn sapphic romance. If you like dragon lore, hidden truths, and epic fantasy this will be a read for you. I received an ARC.
A sweet sapphic romance, forbidden magic, and lovable cast of characters make Tarnished the perfect fantasy road trip! An action-packed fantasy adventure. Fans of fae, magic, and dragons will find much to love here.
Unofficial thoughts: Do you love LOTR but wish it was about the women? Read this!!
“I’ve just…never seen the sky this large before.” “Not have I, friend. How lucky are we to see the beauty of something new?”
This book is the beauty of something new! I am lucky enough to have a ARC copy of this book and reading it has set my sapphic, fairytale loving heart aflame. I am already looking forward to it being published and being able to have a physical copy to add to my shelves. Between magic, mysteries, beautiful autumn vibes, and a slow but fierce love story- there is something here for everyone to enjoy. The one and only thing I have to complain about - is that this book is not yet published, and I am already longing for the next! Our main characters Ailith and Caitriona have the most endearing and heart wrenching story you could ask for. If you enjoy fairy tales, autumn, dragons, mystical creatures, cursed girls, and seeing the female knight get the princess- this is the book for you.
Tarnished is a beautifully written, cozy yet gripping fantasy, full of imagery and intrigue. I was immediately pulled in by the intricate writing and as more of the world began coloring in, I couldn't put it down. The curse that lives in this story grows right alongside the characters' emotions in a slow burn. I would recommend this high fantasy to anyone in need of a sapphic romance as well as to anyone who needs some dragon fire in their lives.
"Sympathy and fairness are not in the nature of curses."
Tarnished takes readers on a compelling fall adventure across the continent of Visennore. There are unique, intriguing creatures (like swamp dukes) paired with your favorite classic magic beings (witches and fae). The world building feels so complete that the political conflicts and magic are totally believable. The slow-burn, sapphic knight and princess relationship will have you yelling, "Just kiss already!"
I loved joining Ailith and Caitriona on their journey. I'm excited and curious to see what happens in Book 2 of The Elder Tree Trilogy!
Tarnished by Erica Rose Eberhart is a beautifully crafted high fantasy tale that had so many thing to love—badass women, sweeping adventures, and a sapphic bodyguard-princess romance that had me hooked from the start. With its queer-normative world, intricate world-building, and well-rounded characters, this book is an engaging and heartfelt read for fans of fantasy and romance alike.
Ailith MacCree is a relatable and strong protagonist who yearns for more than her mundane life as a gate guard in the struggling city of Braewick. When she’s tasked with escorting Princess Caitriona to the Endless Mountains, she embarks on a perilous journey filled with magic, mystery, and danger. Ailith’s growth over the course of the story is deeply satisfying, as she learns not only about the world around her but also about herself. Caitriona is equally compelling, with her powerful yet dangerous magic and her tragic backstory, which adds layers of complexity to her character. The romance between Ailith and Caitriona is sweet and tender, unfolding amidst the high-stakes action and supernatural challenges. Their relationship is beautifully written, though I would have loved to see more moments between them fully fleshed out on the page. The intimate scene is closed-door, which fits the tone of the story, but I found myself wishing for just a touch more exploration of their romantic connection.
One of the standout elements of this book is its rich world-building. The prose is lovely, pulling you into the lush landscapes, treacherous journeys, and magical lore of Braewick and beyond. The inclusion of dragons (yes, DRAGONS!) adds a thrilling element that fantasy lovers will absolutely adore. The antagonists are multidimensional and hateable in the best way, adding depth to the stakes without falling into cliché villain territory.
The representation in Tarnished is another highlight. Eberhart has crafted a queer-normative world where LGBTQ characters are naturally woven into the narrative, making it a refreshing and inclusive read. The diversity feels organic and integral to the story, adding to its charm and authenticity.
The pacing is steady, and while the book is rich with detail, it never feels bogged down. The balance between action, character development, and emotional beats keeps you invested from start to finish.
Tarnished is a thrilling, heartfelt, and beautifully written fantasy adventure that delivers on its promises of magic, danger, and romance. While I wished for a bit more exploration of the romance and some moments to linger a little longer, it’s still a captivating story that I recommend. Fans of sapphic fantasy, strong female leads, and dragons will find much to love in this epic tale. I’m eagerly looking forward to what Erica Rose Eberhart writes next!
Thank you to Erica Rose Eberhart for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"If you're lost, I'll find you and bring you back to yourself."
I cannot wait for book 2! (Okay I can, but I will be on the edge of my seat until then.) I think the quote up above summarizes Tarnished accurately.
I am a huge fan of high fantasy, and this book delivers. The main focus of Tarnished is the plot in which our main characters go on a quest to discover more about Princess Caitriona's magic (meanwhile her father, the King, despises magic). Our lovely guard, Ailith, is more motivated by the money involved... money that can help her ailing parents. While embarking on their journey, the two grow close.
The romance between the main characters is very sweet and slowburn. There ends up being a lot of touch-her-and-die energy, which I loved. Though there is a lot more to the plot than the romance including colonialism and strong political themes. I am curious to see where the second book takes Ailith and Cait; however, this novel is told from multiple POVs including Greer, Cait's sister and heir to the throne. I imagine, given the ending, we will see more from Greer in the next coming book.
The writing is beautiful, the world feels fleshed out (I particularly loved learning about the different magical creatures), and I thought the pacing and plot were perfect. The novel followed the classic Hero's Journey storyline, but with a satisfying twist at the end (and a couple others throughout!). A strong debut novel from Erica Rose Eberhart, and I look forward to reading her future works.
Additional info about Tarnished down below... if that's your thing. (Beware of any spoilers in the content warnings.)
Pace: Medium (but it felt fast because the plot is compelling!) Mix of plot and character-driven (but heavier on the plot) Features: Strong character development, lovable characters, diversity Moods: adventurous, emotional Rep: bisexual MC, lesbian MC Tropes: Princess x Guard, touch-her-and-die, runaway princess Content Warnings (provided by author): fantasy violence (sword fights, arrow strikes, etc.), death of a parent, death of a child (temporary), genocide, talk of superior race/social persecution, body horror/transformation, descriptions of blood, burning of people, injuries, and scars, implied sex, nightmares, complicated parent-child relationships, and anxiety. Additional Content Warnings (from me): societal expectations regarding sexuality
Wielding forbidden magic, Princess Caitriona, with her guard Ailith, seeks someone to help her understand what is happening to her. Her father, a cruel king trying to destroy all magic and fae, is cold and distant. There is a clear division between good and evil, with a little twist at the end. I enjoyed reading Tarnished by Erica Rose Eberhart because I love strong yet vulnerable female leads, sweet sapphic romance, and dragons. Good world-building, character development, writing style, and steady pace hold interest. The last third picks up the pace for a bit of a showdown as our main characters' journey comes to an end. Ailith and Caitriona grow fond of one another over time as they face adversity on their travels. First friends, then more, the two balance each other and provide physical and emotional support. I like the organic evolution of Cait and Ailith's relationship, though I would like to have had more of those moments played out on the page. There is a sweet closed-door intimate scene for those who prefer that. It was very nice, but I would have liked to see just a bit more. This is a no-spice romance. I like the world Eberhart creates, and the heroes and heroines who do their best to counter the wicked they confront. The lore is interesting as well. There is much to love about Cait and Ailith. There are supporting characters who are not deeply developed but serve their roles in moving the plot along and holding up our mains. I would love to read more by this author. #touchheranddie #oppositesattract #princessguard #dragon #fae #forbiddenmagic #quest #hurt/comfort #softbutch/femme #nursedbacktohealth #fantasyworld #nospice #HEA I received this free ARC from the author. This is my honest opinion.
I just finished this book and absolutely loved it! If you're looking for a book where the female knight and the princess get together, this is it. If you're looking for a book similar to LOTR but with more focus on female characters -- as well as dragons! -- this is it. If you're looking for a world with a slow-burn sapphic romance, this is it.
Caitriona and Ailith have a beautifully written, slow-burn romance that captured my heart. I loved how they were so protective of each other and how they gradually let their feelings show (it's mostly a closed-door romance, but that was fine with me!). The dialogue was perfect, with characterization that made even the side characters pop off the page. I also loved the queer-normative world -- something that fantasy needs more of IMO.
Thank you for writing this Erica! I can't wait to continue the series...
Tarnished by Erica Rose Eberhart is a story that completely pulled me in and didn’t let go. From the start, I was swept up in a world that felt so real, yet full of magic and mystery. Eberhart does such a wonderful job of building this immersive world—there’s so much to explore and every little detail adds to the richness of the story. You can feel the love and care that went into creating this universe.
The Sapphic romance is done so beautifully—it's tender, believable, and unfolds so naturally. The chemistry between the two MCs is electric, and you truly believe in their connection. It’s the kind of romance that grows slowly, but when it hits, it hits hard. I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning and I couldn't help but feel every emotional moment they shared.
The relationships in this book, both romantic and otherwise, feel real and layered. Whether it’s the quiet moments between the main characters or the bonds they have with others, everything feels authentic and grounded. You really get a sense of who they are and why they act the way they do.
The world Eberhart has created is one I never want to leave. There’s so much more to discover, and by the end, I was desperate to know what happens next. I can't wait to return to this world and spend more time with these characters. If you’re looking for a story that’s immersive, full of heart, and has a romance you can’t help but fall in love with, Tarnished is definitely one to pick up.
I am giving this book an easy five star because I want more from this author. A great story of love, family, forgiveness and second chances. Every page was filled with poetic portraits of landscapes, magic, deep thoughts and stunning characters. Other than a beautiful story I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of the author. A breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre.
King Cearny's legacy is built on the annihilation of all magic, a legacy his father set in motion on his first day on the throne. Only humans are safe from the onslaught of ridding the king's land of magic, there are a few safe places for magic wielders, but the king is determined to conquer all of Visennore and eliminate those places permanently. Nothing will stand in his way until all magic is dealt with not even the evil plan set in place long ago to rid the world of the vile and hateful king.
Ailith is a gate guard trying to keep her family afloat with the little money they have. After her father was injured, she is the sole provider of her family relying on a caretaker to take care of her parents while she works double shifts at the gate. Their house needs a new roof, the caretaker needs to be paid, & she has to put food on the table, so they won't starve. Life is hard for her, but she makes do with what she has, keeping her head down and trying her best in a world that only caters to those with money.
Caitriona is a beautiful princess who is hidden away from the public eye after a dragon attacked the kingdom several years ago. She stays mostly to herself spending hours in the library reading & making maps. Her sole companion is her sister Greer, sadly her sister is the next to sit on the throne and has to go away often and her father's command. Caitriona lives a lonely life and often writes her thoughts and feelings on sheets of paper she keeps on her desk.
I don't believe there is a word that can truly describe how much I loved reading this book and exploring Visennore. The details, the slow burn romance, the magic, the PLOT, the characters, their growth, the originality, & the "villains". Tarnished is a phenomenally written book that you will get lost in as you follow Ailith & Caitriona on an adventure of a lifetime. Erica Rose Eberhart created a beautiful and elaborate world that entices the reader and makes it almost impossible to put down. I enjoyed reading every word and clinging to the wonderful love story of the two FMCs. If you love fantasy, magic, magic wielders, FF romance, & a beautifully written story this book is definitely for you. I promise you will not be disappointed once you dive into the world Erica Rose Eberhart has created for her readers.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to the author and publisher for sending this ARC for my review consideration.
This incredible, sweeping fantasy had me hooked from the 4th chapter! Full of adventure, magic, curses, plots, secrets, romance, and more, Tarnished is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys traditional fantasy with a fresh new twist.
I love the world the author has created here. The world itself is diverse and magical and beautiful. Eberhart's prose is just as gorgeous as the setting, and I found myself lingering over particularly wonderful words. I also appreciate a fantasy novel that is unashamedly queernormative while also accomplishing incredible social commentary.
These characters also have such heart! Each character is so multilayered and complex in their histories, motivations, their strengths and weaknesses. I simply adore Caitriona!
The plotting and pacing is immaculate. Like I said, it only took a few chapters to hook me, and I consumed the rest of the book! The action balances perfectly against the character development and plot development. I really never found the story to be slow, nor did I find it rushed. While the story is wrapped up neatly at the end, there are so many stories in this world waiting to be told, I just know it.
This is peak adventure fantasy. Do yourself a favor and make sure this is on your TBR! 5/5
I had the honor of being provided an ARC copy of this wonderful book. Thank you, author, for your generosity!
Step into Eberhart's rich, fantasy world with sometimes terrifying and new, sometimes fearsome and classic creatures.
From the start, Ailith (the lion-hearted FMC) tugged at my emotions of holding family above all else, and the familiar and relatable anxiety of leaving the only life you've known behind. She is tasked with escorting the cinnamon roll princess Cait on a journey to find one who they hope can help with Cait's dilemma...which I will keep delightfully spoiler-free. BUT, it's a doozy, and it definitely complicates their budding friendship and sweet romance.
I rooted for these remarkable women the whole way through, fell in love with side characters (Crowley 4 LIFE), and developed gripping TERROR for one particular type of creature...
...drowning dukes, I'm looking at you.
Don't hesitate to take a chance on this author, because she has SO MUCH MORE to give, and I cannot wait to hold this book and its future installments in my hands!
My one regret with getting this as an ARC? It’s going to be even longer before I find out what happens next.
This was a really anticipated read for me. When I first started it, I thought I had a pretty good idea of where it was going. It soon became apparent that I was very, very wrong.
I loved both of the two main POV characters and their relationship with each other. This wasn’t insta-love, but a slow build up throughout most of the book that I really enjoyed seeing develop. I really am desperate to see what happens next with Ailith and Caitriona, and god do I hope they get a happy ending. I also really liked seeing the story from Greer’s perspective, and am looking forward to seeing more of her as the series goes on.
Tarnished was something that I really wanted for a while - fantasy that has a sort of classic taste to it if that makes sense, while also having its own identity. I wasn’t expecting themes such as colonialism and the rewriting of history to be touched on, but really appreciated it.
I would definitely recommend picking this up when it comes out in January!
Ailith is doing everything she can to help her family survive. She pulls doubles as a guard for the kings court trying to scrape enough money for her and her parents to live. When Ailith is presented with an offer to bring a package to a hermit living in the endless mountains she jumps at the chance to earn some gold and explore the countryside. Little does she know the package she is taking is princess Caitriona. Tarnished is the story of Ailith and Caitriona's adventure as they trek to the endless mountains looking for a way to break a curse.
I absolutely adored this book. The characters are so loveable, the story-telling is vivid, and the attention to detail is on point. You really will fall in love with Ailith and Caitriona as you root for them to find their way. I highly recommend this to anyone beginning their fantasy journey as this is a very quick read with not too much world-building. I cannot wait to continue this series with book two.
I really enjoyed this book! I thought the writing was great. Loved the storyline.
Magic? Dragons? Fae? Yes, please!
I absolutely loved that the two main characters are female! Watching their friendship grow was everything 🩷 Their journey throughout this book had me so captivated. I had a hard time putting this one down, stayed up way too late reading! And the plot twist! Was not expecting that! I had alot of fun reading this book, definitely can't wait for the next one in the series!
If you love fantasy, magic, dragons, Sapphic romance and strong women you will love this book!
I received an ARC from the author. Well, that was a journey! I came across this book and author on social media, and just knew I had to read it! I messaged the author and she kindly sent over an ARC. I was hooked straight away, there was so much tension at the start and I loved the world building. As the relationship between Aelith and Caitriona developed, my heart was full and I was enjoying their travels to the person they hoped would help them. But.. Eberhart decided to make the last third of the book so gripping and dramatic, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! What. An. Ending. I have no idea when book 2 will be published, but I am so ready.
The world building in this was great, it wasn't terribly slow and mucky like high fantasy world building tends to be. The female characters in this book are strong and badass, ready to protect what they love and set the world on a better path. What are you supposed to do when the mission you set out on isn't what it was supposed to be? You slap fate in the face, and that's exactly what these ladies did! Absolutely loved this book.
“They saw the princess moving forward with the determined step of a queen wearing a crown of smoke.”
I was very fortunate to receive an ARC of TARNISHED. Eberhart has created a lush high fantasy world that is easy to get lost in, but made all the better by the sapphic love story between two of the MCs.
“If you’re lost, I will find you and bring you back to yourself.”
I did not see the ending coming which speaks to Eberhart’s brilliant writing style. I have a crush on both Ailith and Caitriona and I cannot wait to read more of their story!
I love this book. There is only one bad thing: it's part of a trilogy and I have to wait for the next book!!! I love Cait and Ailith. They're both amazing characters. Cait is my favorite. I love the world in which they live. I love the supporting characters.
I loved this so much! Magic! Swords! Dragons! Curses! Princess x guard romance! Neurodivergent rep + other disabilities! It is the first of a trilogy, but it also has a really satisfying ending, so if you are reluctant to start a series before the rest is out so you can avoid a cliffhangers, you can safely start Tarnished! (I received a free copy in exchange for a review!)
Tarnished is exquisitely written, blending cozy and gripping elements. Its vivid imagery and captivating storyline drew me in instantly. I couldn't put it down! This high fantasy comes highly recommended, particularly for those craving dragon-filled adventures. I'm delighted to have read it.
Dragons. A princess and a guard. Another princess and her guard. Magic. Crow Witch! Need I say more?! Loved this and can’t wait for the sequel!! Perfectly sapphic and full of magic 🥹
I really enjoyed this book. It was pretty lyrical and the unlikeable characters are REALLY unlikeable. I loved Cait and Ailith, and Greer is amazing. I can’t wait for book two!
Tarnished is an intriguing epic fantasy novel by debut author Erica Rose Eberhart. The story follows a runaway princess with strange magic awakening in her, Cait, and her hired guard, Ailith. As the two travel across the kingdom to find help for Cait's situation and face many challenges, sweet feelings begin to develop between them. Also central to the story is Cait's sister, heir to the throne, who tries to help her sister escape their tyrannical father's notice.
It is a story filled with magic, mythical creatures, fights for survival and complex family relationships. Most of the novel focuses on the women's journey, with numerous stops, encounters and obstacles. I somehow didn't feel the urgency and tension as I would have liked, but I did enjoy the side characters they met along the way! I also liked the world-building, and would have happily learnt a lot more about the Endless Mountains in particular.
The women's blossoming romance was really cute, and I loved the depth of its development, thanks to both of them showing their growing feelings through their own POVs. They were so protective of each other and their affection really shone through!
Thank you to the author for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
