The body of a woman has been pulled from a canal in East London. Police were called to Homerton’s River Lee Navigation at around 11.40am today (Tuesday, March 7).

There, they found the body of a woman in her 50s who was pronounced dead at the scene. Metropolitan Police are working to identify the dead woman.

A crime scene remains in place. There have been no arrests.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “On Wednesday, May 7, at 11.37am, police were called to the River Lee Navigation, Homerton, to reports of a body in the canal. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and Marine Support Unit.

“The body of a woman in her 50s was recovered from the water. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Cordons remain in place and an investigation is under way to identify the female and inform her next of kin.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 11.57am today (Tuesday, May 7) to reports of an incident at the junction of Homerton Road and Lee Conservancy Road, Hackney. We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager, a paramedic in a fast response car and members of hazardous area response team (HART).

“Sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
