THE VANCOUVER SUN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2001 Lee gets off board to play it for laughs ason Lee's breakthrough role was in Kevin Smith's 1995 indie, Mallrats. Smith, known for his quirky, sophomoric subject matter and references to Star Wars, hockey and comic books, cast Lee as high-school kid Brodie Bruce, and has since included Lee in his movies Chasing Amy, Dogma and the recent Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. "Fortunately for me," deadpans Lee, "because I was pretty much ready to get out of That's right, skateboarding. The southern California native had turned his childhood passion into a career, even popularizing a move called the "360 flip." "I didn't kr know what else I was going to do and that happened and it's been going ever since yeah, uphill ever since, I guess," he admits as we chat between shots at the dining room table of a Shaughnessy -turnedmovie-set fo for Lee's latest the romantic comedy, A Guy Thing. Lee plays a guy who wakes up from his bachelor party in bed with a young woman (Julia Stiles) to whom he's not engaged.

"He's your typical sweet, kind-hearted fella who just can't quite find his place and he's not the best liar. Fortunately, his fiance (Selma Blair) is a bit dim so he's getting away with more than he thought he would be able to." Lee now seems to have made the move to the mainstream he stars as Tom Cruise's best pal in Vanilla Sky (opening on Friday) and appears to be on a comedy roll with parts in Heartbreakers with Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the upcoming Barry Sonnenfeld film, Big Trouble, and Imagine Entertainment's The Promise with Tom Green. And for someone who admits he began playing the fool as early as kindergarten "I was always goofy and very much the smart-ass class clown" Lee's turn as funnyman isn't right out of left field. "It just sort of happened that way. I just take it as it comes, ya know.

I like that I've just been cast for what people feel I'm right for, so I don't think I'll ever have to worry about being Mr. Comedy and always trying to be funny or having to be funny. I just sort of do what roles require of me." It was during the Vanilla Sky shoot last winter when stars Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage imploded, but Lee, who worked sporadically over the five-month shoot, says he wouldn't have known what Cruise was going through unless he'd been told. "I wasn't there when they announced it on the set sort of inform everybody about what was going on in case they were to hear about it in the media, which of course everybody did. I wouldn't have known didn't show at all." Vanilla Sky was Lee's second experience working with music-journalistturned-film-director Cameron Crowe. In Crowe's earlier film, Almost Famous, Lee plays rock singer Jeff Bebe. "It was fun," says Lee, 66 but at the same time it was kind of intense because we knew it was something different for Cameron. And in a way, something different for all of us. I don't think I had done anything quite like that and I knew it was important for me and I wanted to do a really good job.

And I think everybody kind of knew that something different was being made. Something incredibly unique and important. All the while, of course, was incredibly happy to be there and to have had the part written for me." Next, Lee moves over to another Vancouver-shot film, Lawrence Kasdan's The Dreamcatcher (from the Stephen King novel) in January. He'll play one of four childhood pals who go on a hunting trip, only to become the hunted. But first, he has a whole month off.

And what'll he do? "Sleep, enjoy not having to get up at a specific time every day," he says with a sweet smile. IS IT FINAL?
